To keep us busy...I found a link ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Sabres_draft_picks ) that shows all the Sabres Draft Picks by year...so...your goal is to create a starting lineup (4 Lines[C, LW, RW], 3 D pairs, and 2 Goalies [starter and backup]).

Mine:
Rick Martin-Perreault-Gare
Andreychuk-Turgeon-Mogilny
Craig Ramsay-Luce-Ray Sheppard
Hogue-D.Plante-Afinogenov

Housley-Schoenfeld
M. Ramsey-Fogolin
Playfair-Hajt

Barrasso
Edwards

I would have Audette over Ray Sheppard. Also Calle Johannson over Playfair or Fogolin

How the hell do you put Derek Plante on your roster. Derek Plante? What about Vanek or about 30 other guys? Derek Plante, wow!

Maybe he meant AMERICAN draft picks? LOL.

Geez. Does that mean you'd have to include Rasmussen? Ugh.

Was Audette drafted by Buffalo?

Yes:
Selected by Buffalo Sabres round 9 #183 overall 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

A much, much better player than Plante too.

Brad May:
Selected by Buffalo Sabres round 1 #14 overall 1990 NHL Entry Draft

And a much more useful player than Plante ever was. :D

No, but you could do better with those last two forward lines. Someone mentioned - there's no Vanek there.

He also missed John Cullen (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?page=HistoricalPlayerDetail&service=page&pkey=8446251) who should be on that list I think.

Max doesn't have much more, unless you're counting concussions.

Taro Tsujimoto of the Tokyo Katanas is the best draft pick ever in any sport.

Right, Plante deserves to be on this list more than Vanek. After all he did have 27 goals one year and 23 another. Plus he top three point totals 56, 53 and 34 are quite amazing. I mean geez this guy played 450 games, had 96 career goals and 248 career points. Vanek's 68 goals and 132 points in 163 games can't touch that. Not to mention Plante was just a more skilled player. Anyone who watched the two could tell you that.

Thanks for showing me the way sukie. Now tell me how we are doing in the War on Terror.

Since this has become a bash Derek Plante thread I have to defend him just a bit. He was also the biggest surprise clutch game 7 player ever in my opinion. In 3 career game 7s with the Sabres he scored 3 goals, including the game tying and game winning goals against Ottawa, causing the infamous "Are you ready Legion of Doom? Here come the Buffalo Sabres!" call (always was one of my favorites). In fact here it is..

Yea, the infamous pick right before Keith Tkachukl!

At least Plante won a playoff series for the club. He was playing in Japan last season last I heard.

Did you see them? I did. About the 27 most uninspired goals you've ever seen. Rarely did DP, who was a nice kid, ever score in a big spot.

Look at the video posted a few spots up.

Game 7 against Ottawa in OT is a big goal, imo.

But maybe that is just me.

I am a little surprised at the dislike of Plante. He was never a great player, but was a solid guy for the team. His contributions as a #1 center his rookie year should not be overlooked (while LaFontaine and Hawerchuk were out)

He had a decent season or two. Never lived up to expectations pinned on him as he was coming into the league. I never really was a fan. But like I said, he was a nice enough kid, just never turned into the player he was supposed to. I couldn't wait for the Sabres to dump him at the end.

That video depicts Derek Plante's magnum opus.

The players the Sabres drafted that were so supposed to be really good. Not necessarily high picks, but also players that came through the minors and were really hyped up. Alexei Tezikov would be one example. I'll go first.

Savage Kryukov Heisten
Mille Holzinger Primeau
Bartovic Zigomanus Kristek
May Rasmussen Van Oene

Cooper Tsygurov
Ndur Tezikov
Janik Dicaire

Noronen

I know May and Rasmussen had decent careers, but they were two of the more hyped players in Sabres history.

Well, his rookie year wasn't half bad either. That's still two better years than Derek Plante ever had.

Plante led the team in scoring one year, so to say both of Vanek's years were better than any year Plante had is an exaggeration.

Oh yes, I remember the "Derek Plante is our leading scorer" years. Wasn't Scott Pearson also on the third line that year? How many points did Derek have the year he led the team in scoring?

I'll have to check, but I bet proportionally it was as good as or better than Vanek.

Plante also never had players like Max and Roy with him or Drury and Briere on the PP. He also played on a team that had a goal of winning 2-1, not 5-3.
