Lots of disadvantages to a Mac.
First. SW availability. Sure you can run Windows stuff, but with an added layer to the API (application programming interface) the stuff will run slower. Also they look gay LOL. Furthermore your hardware upgrades are severely limited, especially with a laptop.
Post #8? That's sukie after he bought his latest Mac. At one time he used to actually look like a male member of the human species.

If you are a hardcore computer nerd and you absolutely have to have your computer run at a speed faster than it takes light to travel...PC IS THE WAY TO GO...if you have better stuff to do and are a casual computer guy and want an efficient, non-virus prone, fun computer...Mac is the way to go.

Good thing the extent of my computer use is internet and IMing!
And I am not ditching my PC completely, I will have both. I just have been longing for the ability to have computer portability, so Macbook was the way to go.

Expensive for what you get but Macs are fine products. Just wouldn't pay the premium they are asking and yes, I do like to go to light speed on my PCs. BTW, I hit 4.0Ghz on my e6600. Not real stable but I could run SuperPi to 1MB in 12.8 seconds. LOL

Put it this way. My video and audio card cost more than a Mac. They relieve the microP of burden, thus making the machine scream even faster.

Here is the reality of the situation as I see it. Mac makes a nice PC that is marketed towards a niche crowd of folks that are in love with the product and the perceived persona that goes along with it. As far as performance there is no comparison. The Mac gets killed on all fronts. Couple that with the price you pay and it really isn't an option unless you like the simplicity of the OS and are willing to live with the slower performance for the wow factor that Mac designs into their gear.
Mac makes a great looking PC, no doubt about it. OS-X is a wonderful OS but I'd argue with anyone regarding its security. As the Mac line gets more attention from consumers it also draws in the hackers. They are catching right up to M$ in the vulnerability category.
XP is a mature product that is very stable and is about as secure as an OS of its vintage can be. It works with everything and, relatively speaking, is not a huge system hog. I am convinced that M$ can't make a great OS but XP is pretty close to being there.
Vista is a bomb. Skip it. maybe the service-pack that is due in 2008 will fix some of the problems but stay the hell away from it for at least the next year IMHO. It provides very little in the security department over XP and absolutely eats up system resources with little or no benefit to the owner. In fact it will kill you if you benchmark like I do. I have no doubt that M$ will release the longhorn OS that they had been working on, and what Vista was supposed to be, within the next two-three years. That one will be a winner.
Linux is becoming mainstream. It is a wonderful little OS that barely makes a footprint on your system resources and as soon as Forum Wars is over I plan on becoming a Linux user, at least part time. I csan't wait to dip my feet into the Linux pond.
AMD is not a player right now as far as desktop CPUs are concerned. They can't come close to what the Core 2 Duo offers and this is coming from a rabid AMD fanboy. Maybe we'll see what their quad core can do in 2008 but forget them for now. Why? Because Intel is cutting prices, again, on July 22nd and you'll be able to get a CPU that absolutely screams for around $150. Honestly, these Core 2 Duos are eye watering and are, by far, the best CPUs ever produced. I mean that wholeheartedly.
Bottom line here is if you want performance go with a PC, not a Mac. If you have ever thought about building your own rig then DO IT NOW. DDR2 prices are incredibly low but will be rising quickly. CPU prices will hit rock bottom on July 22nd and there are some incredible motherboards available for under $200 (mine, Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus, was $184 and it rocks). Both Nvidia and ATI/AMD have released some outstanding video cards and their new price war is driving those costs into the basement. Don't wait as the market is adjusting. All the memory makers expected huge demand because of Vista and it never materialized so there is a glut. They have cut production so a month will cost you $50-$100 for RAM.
Don't mean to offend the Mac users. I really do like their rigs and have owned two and used several but they are so far behind PCs that it isn't arguable any longer performance-wise. My brother-in-law spent $1500 on a beautiful Mac machine that is all monitor and a small little base but it is so slow that it made me want to scream. He played with my old AMD rig and was amazed that a computer could run that fast. This Core 2 rig puts my screaming Opteron 165 rig to shame but my B-I-L bought another Mac anyways. Mac users love the brand, no doubt.

Yes Intel has the lead now but classically they play leapfrog with AMD. That's a good thing because it pushes the tech and drives prices down. That said I am an AMD fan big time. What an ultra stable chip. Now my X64 6000+ 3.0 GHz dual core may not be as fast as a top of the line Intel, but....add on an ASUS EN8800GTX pair (yes, bought another one) in SLI, a top creative soundcard, 4 GB of some of the best Corsair Dominator money can buy, 10K rpm SATAs, 16X DVD-RAM, and I've offloaded a ton of uP processes, and removed as many bottlenecks as possible. Can I beat you in SuperPi? No. Can I bog this rig I am typing on by running a TV card, mediaplayer, quicktime, iTunes, a huge download, System Mechanic, a Kaspersky IS sweep, and other resource hogs, ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!? NO, NOT EVEN A GLITCH. I know, I've tried it and given up. I can't bog this rig. And that's the entire point.
Merc. Spot dead on about VISTA. I own ultimate and it was the worst $400 I ever spent. I dual boot and LOVE Umbuto Linux. And it's cheap as hell too. You can get it online for $0.00. Too me it's the BEST OS out there. Add that and this machine gets red hot.
Funny. I needed to jazz up to an 850 watt power supply running through a APC 1500 X5 Back-Up UPS. My electric bill went up literally $60 a month just from my rig.
Macs are nice for email and surfing. But performance wise they don't cut it. They have a Mercedes look with Geo performance. And you pay through the nose for it.
But run DOOM III with an AV in the background and you'll throw the thing against your wall.
And you are right about the OS. Security is a myth. The issue is that most computers are PCs so that's where the cybercriminals target. And as you know rootkits nowadays are designed so that the user DOES NOT DETECT something wrong. So being a MAC owner might give you a false sense of security if you buy into the "great security" myth. "My Mac runs great so I must not have any malware on my OS". Except that when your Mac is idle you are emailing porn spam to half the planet and will never know it. LOL

Merc. One more thing. I spent a $100 on a top of the line Netgear VPN firewall. Worked great with XP. Well, I moved to VISTA, it's almost August and Netgear has YET to publish VISTA drivers.
Ready to toss it out and when the drivers arrive it'll be obsolete. That sickens me.

I won't argue with you here Pete. AMD chips are at an all time low and while we can argue which scores the best on a benchmark or encodes a video fastest the truth of the matter is that all of thes chips are outstanding values. I have built more AMD rigs than Core 2 over the last four months because for most users the X2 offers way more performance than they need and the chips are ridiculously inexpensive.
I hope that AMD does make a screaming comeback in 2008 but at this point it looks like the best we can hope for is that they catch up. Of course who knows at this point. Also, the world of CPUs is on th brink of a sea change in design. 4 cores, 8 cores etc. are klargely irrelevant as most software doesn't even take advantage of two cores. Expect to see, in the near future, AMD rock the world with a 4 core CPU comprised of two CPUs, a GPU and a chipset all placed on one chip that sucks about 60 watts of voltage. Imaging that in your laptop. I believe the day of the benchmarker, as it is today, is nearing an end as CPUs will start becoming more specialized and purose built.

I'll be going there soon buddy. Vista may be the best thing that ever happend to Linux :slam:
Funny. I needed to jazz up to an 850 watt power supply running through a APC 1500 X5 Back-Up UPS. My electric bill went up literally $60 a month just from my rig.
Just to add for those who don't know, a larger PSU will not increase your power bill and may even decrease it. A PSU will pull only what it needs from the wall. Efficiency in turning that AC into DC is what is important for the electric bill.
