How?

I don't get it. The statement was made that Tommy would spend MORE than last year... so far that's just not adding up unless he gives Roy a raise of $10M.

BS

I have been thinking the same thing. I think maybe we will offer long term contracts to Roy and Vanek, and then being in some players. But I think we will give Vanek and Roy raises to keep them for a long time.

They dropped $8mil in salary yesterday and all the big FA's are gone, so i think that statement was untrue.

Yep, sounds like a lie to me. So that opens up a whole new set of questions.

I don't think they were lying, I think the were sure they were going to sign Drury.

They had a long time of exclusive negotiations to offer Drury a contract and they waited till 3 days before UFA opened. I don't think they were serious about resigning him, and definitely don't think they were sure they would have him resigned. i think he said that to get people off his back, which ultimately worked.

I think they were talking to him all along. Quinn even said last night that they were prepared to go to what the Rangers offered him, but Drury never gave them a counter offer on the $6 million per year offer that they made.

I think they had every intention to sign Drury, but I really think that he didn't want to be here anymore.

Its very simple.

Lock all these players up for 4-6 years

5.5 mil a year for Miller
5 mil a year for Vanek
4.5 mil a year for Max
4 mil a year for Campbell
3.5 mil a year for Pominville
3 mil a year for Roy
1.5 mil a year for Gaustad

You have about $15 million is added salary. Give or take a few hundred thousand, and bam, we are at around 45-46 million, just like they said.

Ide also sign Stafford long term at around 2 million, but thats just me.

Hell will freeze over before they sign all those extensions in the next 3 months.

Agreed, and even if it was the case that added salary is going to extensions, i don't think that's the reason the statement was made. Fans were worried about losing both Briere and Drury, Quinn said they are going to increase the payroll from last year, fans stopped worrying about losing both. They lost both.

I also think they planned to keep Drury. The Salary last season was closer to 41 (it was the cap number that was at 44). So the Sabres only need to spend like 42 if they want to be honest. They're already at around 30. The only thing they'll do is add a $3 million dollar player or 2 $1.5 players.

Y'know, I'd actually be alright with that...although I'd be a bit wary of signing Pominville for that much money (who knows if he's anything more than a 40-50 point guy without Briere?), but it would lock up our core guys for the future.

But when's the last time this Sabres FO has had that kind of foresight?
