There was a pretty good article in hockeybuzz about how the cap is going to take advantage of small market teams.
The Briere contract is a great example. The Flyers pay a ton in the front of the contract (more than the cap hit of 6.5). Then, in the final years, he is either still good and worth it to them to keep or they make him unhappy and ask him to waive the no movement clause for a trade. He does so, and they trade him (washed up) to a small market team who pays, and this is the kicker, LESS than their cap hit of 6.5. This allows them to hit the MINIMUM cap without paying to the minimum.
Look for small market teams to lose out to big ones in free agency and, 4 years from now, start getting fed old stars of yesteryear so they can hit the minimum cap without bucking up! What garbage.
