Senate immigration bill suffers crushing defeat
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's immigration bill suffered a crushing defeat Thursday in the Senate, when members voted against advancing the controversial legislation.
A final tally for the vote has not yet been announced. (46-53)
The bill would provides a path to citizenship for some of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and toughens border security.
If the bill fails, supporters and opponents of the controversial legislation claim there is no way to bring it back before this Congress ends.
Senators voting against cutting off debate and referring the bill for a final vote. The cloture vote required a three-fifths majority, or 60 votes.
Senators cast ballots a day after supporters beat back a number of potentially fatal amendments.

For all the bitching and moaning that Republicans did when they called Democrats "obstructionists" in the last Congress....they have now become what they complained so bitterly about.
BELIEVE IT!

Immigration foes have sown the seeds of their own defeat. If they thought this bill stunk, they are in for a real surprise in 2009. The '08 elections are not going to go well for their side. They have alienated the hispanic vote something fierce. Pro-immigration forces will be in a much stronger position in 2009 and will not have to compromise as much as they did in this bill.
Bush's advisors were smart enough to see that it was either this bill now or a much worse one, from their persepective, later. This plays right in to the hands of the Democrats who are desparate to gain an advantage in New Mexico, Florida, Arizona and even Texas.

Angus: Keep dreaming. The Dems are shooting themselves. Hard. They're damaging their own chances for '08.

They will do just fine. They are pretty much all from conservative states without a significant latino vote so their vote, if anything, will help them when re-election time comes. A number of them are freshman not up for re-election until 2012 when no one will care what happened on this vote.
Any that are up for re-election in 2008 will not be running with the Iraq war, Bush, Cheney and the whole republican festival of incompetence hanging from their necks. Without that burden which can make even an incumbent vulnerable, they will do okay. The republicans however, have problems enough without this.
Even the Wall Street Journal agrees with my analysis so I must be right:
"The longer term danger is that the GOP is sending a message to Latinos that it doesn't want them in the party. And if that message sticks, Republicans could put themselves back in minority party status for a generation or more. Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority in the country, and their voting numbers continue to grow. Hispanics were estimated to be 8% of the electorate in 2006, compared with 6% in 2004 and 5.5% in 2000. Census data show that the number of Latino voters could rise to 10% or more by 2008. The demographic reality is that the GOP can't be a majority party with Anglo-Saxon votes alone."

But they lose their base think about it carefully.
They were thrown over the top with Republican votes.
But they must retain all Dem votes that's not happening.

jlb: Did you read the post,or just skim it?
None of the three senators will be up for re-election for 5 YEARS! By then, only the die-hards will remember this vote.
Also,Angus,I'm going to partly agree and disagree with the take on where the GOP goes with this. That could serve as A factor on why the Repubs may be facing minority status for a generation or more...but trust me,there's many other factors that could produce the same result.

I knew where they all stood without even reading it.
Before I posted it I knew who they were talking about.
They were just recently elected was never news to me.
The why and how they were elected also doesn't escape.
They will not continue getting the support they need in the future.
How much did you know about each of these candidates while they ran.
They only had a chance because they pretended to be Rep.
But the key will be they can't in 5 years run against Bush.
That's there achilles heal Carl.

I agree, there are quite a few reasons they could be in trouble long term. In the short term, states like New Mexico and Florida could flip on this issue alone.
