It's already safe. Blockbuster is the biggest movie rental store in the nation. Movie rentals are a major determinent. Hopefully bluray comes down in price soon.

I'll hold out a little longer. The price needs to come down and they got to get their full specification finalized before I buy a stand alone blu ray player.

Blu-ray players to be obsolete by 2007
Hi-def buyers beware: current Blu-ray players will be rendered effectively obsolete by the end of the year. That’s the consequence of a much-delayed mandate by the governing Blu-ray disc association.

Although at first glance both Blu-ray and its rival HD DVD appear equally matched, there is a significant difference between the two. HD DVD machines have come to the market fully-formed, with a finalized specification and uniform compatibility; Blu-ray players are being sold with an unfinalised specification. And these differences are frustrating studios, particularly those trying to release comparable products on both high-def formats...

i already know i will be a blu ray buyer. I plan on getting a PS3 sometime in the next year, and when i do, i will have a blu-ray player. no need to buy a stand-alone player, since the ps3 will function as mine. hd-dvd just seems to have no chance with blockbuster and the ps3 all supporting blue ray. just need to get netflix on board and hddvd (even with the porn industry) will die
