Is there a way to control what programs users can access in XP. I have a accounts on a computer for both of my kids but it seems pointless as they can not run any programs in their limited accounts. I have been looking for directions on how to let them use some programs but can't find any way to do it.
any ideas?

You say they can't run programs... is it because of permissions? Or is it because the programs aren't available? If the latter is the case you can just copy shortcuts to the programs into their 'start menu' folders.. located in 'documents and settings'. :niterider

permissions in xp are a joke compared to the linux setup they are based upon.
but woody's right.
copying your desktop shortcut icons into their desktops should work.

Set the permissions in the directories of the applications that you them to be able to use. That should work. Right click on the program files directory and check all for their profiles.
In Vista you set the user permissions. I don't remember if XP does the same. Woody? Nehe? Merc?

I know there's a simple fisher-price feature in XP that allows you to determine 'who can run what'... but I can't remember where it's at. The answer to the problem may lie in the program . But if I were I would just blow away your kid's accounts and re-create them.. then re-apply your security. Something might have gotten tweaked the wrong way. :niterider

i have never been able to do it. maybe there's an app written to do it, but to my eyes - "permissions" in XP means "multiple users w/ file sharing". it has nothing to do with the ability to use particular apps.

maybe that will work for you? obviously replacing the SAS .exe with whatever programs you want to let the kids use.

Nehe, permissions on XP is very easy. There are differences though. XP pro and XP home are completely different. XP home does not have the permissions tab, where as XP pro does.
MPW, if your kids are having problems running these apps, then just create a group in your user profiles called apps or something, and add the apps group to the administrators group. Go to the folder where the .exe is and go to permissions and just ad the group to the permissions. They will have admin rights to that specific folder.
