Conventional wisdom suggests the Buffalo Sabres should have enjoyed Chris Drury and Daniel Briere while they had them because in the salary cap world, there’s no way they’ll be able to keep both of them.

“You know what conventional wisdom is, don’t you?” asked GM Darcy Regier. “It’s the wisdom of convenience.”

Both Briere and Drury are eligible for unrestricted free agency July 1 and there has been a sense in the hockey community at least one of them will have to go. Regier refutes that notion, saying the math could very well work in the Sabres’ favor.

“I don’t know exactly where that is coming from because we’re not at a tipping point,” Regier said. “We’ve never viewed it as one or the other.”

That’s not to suggest the Sabres will continue to be one big, happy family, but to concede the Sabres won’t be able to keep both is premature.

The fact is, the Sabres are quite nicely set up for next season. They have a total of 13 core players – goalie Ryan Miller, defensemen Henrik Tallinder, Brian Campbell, Toni Lydman, Dmitri Kalinin and Jaroslav Spacek and forwards Tim Connolly, Maxim Afinogenov, Jason Pominville, Ales Kotalik, Jochen Hecht, Paul Gaustad and Drew Stafford – under contract for $28.4 million.

The salary cap is expected to rise next season to somewhere between $47 million and $49 million, so for the sake of argument, let’s just assume it’s going to be $48 million. That leaves the Sabres almost $20 million, if they choose to go to the upper end of the cap, to fill out their roster. After two straight seasons of sellouts and lengthy playoff runs, the Sabres should be able to handle it.

They need a backup goalie and a couple of depth defensemen and they must re-sign restricted free agents Thomas Vanek, Derek Roy, Andrew Peters and Dan Paille and either re-sign or replace Dainius Zubrus, Teppo Numminen and Adam Mair.

Let’s say they can get a hometown discount and sign both Briere and Drury for a combined total of $12 million or $13 million. That takes them up to $41.4 million. Vanek and Roy will cost a combined $3 million, which takes you to $44.4 million. A backup goalie and Peters will cost a combined $1 million and they’ll be able to sign Paille for $800,000 on a two-way deal. That takes us to $46.2, which would mean they’d technically be able to sign Zubrus, but they wouldn’t be allowing themselves much wiggle room.

I like the premise of the article, which is a positive piece about the Sabres' offseason for a change, but I don't want the exact same team back as last season. They didn't win it in '06-07, so why would it change a year from now? Bottom line: Re-sign a captain and get tougher and upgrade the defense.

I agree we need some slight adjustments.
We are on the verge of something great here.
C'mon Tommy Boy finishing ingredients please.

This will be a great way to find out who you can actually believe. There are writers out there who have said that Drury's wife wants out of Buffalo. Then there is word out of Buffalo that she loves it there. Then there are writers who say Briere wants to go to Philly. Then there are rumors that neither want to leave and will take less than market value to stay. I think the Sabes are going to come up with good offers so it should be real interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree. It will take careful planning and negotiations, but I think Darcy can pull it off. If only Larry Quinn lets him do his job.

By the way, nice avatar of Big John Studd!

yeah.... it might come down to Mr. Galisano deciding if we can spend the whole cap or not. C'mon Tom fine tune this team so we can finish it off next season!!!

It's a nice article, but i've really tried to stop reading most articles and especially blogs, they're purely just there for entertainment, not with actual info, we'll all know july 1st or sooner.

I appreciate some optimism for once, but Vanek alone will likely cost us $3 million on a long term deal. If Darcy gets him signed for less than $3 million he's a genius. I think Roy signs for $1.5 or less if we're lucky, but the general premise is that the Sabres aren't completely screwed mathematically from keeping Drury and Briere. Imagine the overall depression of 29 other NHL teams when they hear the impossible, the Sabres have locked up Drury, Briere, and Vanek all long term.

Must re-sign Peters...BRILLIANT

Honestly, I think this is just Darcy saving face. Hypothetically, yes, both players could be signed. But the silence on the Drury/Briere matter is deafening, and Darcy knows he needs bank to lock up Miller/Vanek long term.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if we kept one player, and elated if that player's name was Chris Drury.

By the way, I commented on Peters because I think there is no way we sign both...so i was saving my typing on that.

I would agree with the premise of losing Briere. We have that wild card in the name of Tim Connelly to insert in that spot. However, I would lock up Zubrus in case Tim goes down. You can slide Zubi to center if needed. With a good offseason conditioning program, along with the best hands and play making ability this team has seen in decades, if Timmy can stay healthy, they have their center for Poms and Hecht. Lock up Drury and look for some grit at the forward position and on D.
