You can now view the terrific documentary "Control Room" at google video...

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-5468579280837866970&q=control+room

It centers around Al Jazeera TV at the start of the Iraq War.

If I was a high school teacher, I'd be happy to present this to a class.

Does it have a point of view? Of course it does.

Hope it doesn't warp your tender little minds.

I'm 27 minutes into it now. Interesting perspective that we just aren't allowed to see here.

Geez. I hope I don't go on a "list" for watching it.

The funniest part is when the Al Jazeera guys says he hopes to get a job in the US from his work there because the US is the best place to live and raise a family. He's got a chance, yeah.

Just that "War is Hell" "I support the War on Terror" and other one line crap.

You do know that I blame America for terrorism, don't you? Not the American people. But our longstanding policy of meddling in the internal affairs of others. It's called Blowback. We have to change our meddling interventionist policy. Start buy cutting that monsterous defense budget. We don't need a military that big. Pay off the damn national debt before we go broke.

Here's a good article:

http://dir.salon.com/story/ent/feature/2004/06/04/control_room/index_np.html

The night they showed the POWs and dead soldiers ... it was powerful, because Americans won't show those kinds of images," Rushing says. "It made me sick to my stomach." The viewer then expects him to proceed in the same vein of patriotic rhetoric he's been using up to this point in the film -- he is, after all, a Marine -- but instead what follows is an unexpected, and profoundly moving, observation.

The previous night, Al Jazeera had shown similarly graphic images of Iraqis killed during a bombing in Basra, and Rushing calls them "equally if not more horrifying." At the time, though, he admits they hadn't bothered him as much. "I just saw people on the other side," Rushing says, "and those people in the Al Jazeera offices must have felt the way I was feeling that night, and it upset me on a profound level that I wasn't bothered as much the night before. It makes me hate war."

it sucks and shouldn't be considered apart of shiva's film101, but for those who take the time to watch Control Room it's interesting to see Josh's 180.

"She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom. The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force.... She might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit.... [America’s] glory is not dominion, but liberty.”

I started out to watch the first couple minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. It was an interesting perspective. A lot of people talk about the current administration's propaganda, but during the movie I was thinking every war uses propaganda to gain public and troop support. It just seems that with as much media as there is now, you get called out a lot sooner.

I'm glad I watched the first (Al Jazeera) video. It gave me a different perspective. Made me realize that they hate us more than we think they do and also why. None of that dislike I would call irrational either. If it happened to us we'd react the same damn way.

Now "Why We Fight" was outstanding. Saw all parts from beginning to end. Based on historical evidence and interviews with people that should and do know. I'd give it a 10/10.

What I found most interesting about control room was the access (or lack there of) that the military provides to journalists. Most of the reporting is generated from army press conferences held on base. The rest is through "embedded" journalists.

Journalists go where they're told, when they're told. They only report what they are allowed to see or what the army tells them.

During the early stages of the invasion, Al Jazeera was the only source of real journalism available. Western media spun the army's press releases into news and we accepted it as honest reporting.
