Fans showed up early in the morning, in the pouring rain at Prior Airport to welcome back their team. How freakin' cool is this?!?!? I can't imagine the feeling the players got when they walked off of the plane to see the crowd. In the video report - you can see Brian Campbell's smile from ear to ear in amazement and joy.

But this still doesn't make me buy that we have great fans or that this is what makes "Buffalo........Buffalo". Easy to support a good team. Support the team when it's down, that's what makes a true fan..

I never said it was the ONLY thing that makes Buffalo, but the city has been noted for its loyal fans. Sure, you have those that hate 'em when they're down, and love 'em when they're up...every team does. But to go to the airport with the time of night that they got back?! Come on - that takes dedication.
It was just a feel good post.

Hahahahaaaaa...That's a pretty accurate description. There were a few people in that footage that looked like 'real fans'. But you're right. I was thinking 'rock stars' almost the entire time.

That's right! I forgot about the whole bandwagon theory that emanates from these boards and threads. Gone are the days of when fans could just be fans, and now we have a new stereotype - "bandwagon fans." At some point - when is a person allowed to be just a "fan," and not a "bandwagon fan?" Or is there some sort of ceremony that salutes the crossing-over from bandwagon to fan. How do you think fan bases are created?
See the post and the article for what it's worth - fans getting up at the butt-ass crack of dawn to show a little support. Jeesh!

But most of them were "teeny-bopper" types. Everyone knows that there's a ton of younger girls in this town that think the Sabres are "so cute" or whatever....kind of like a boy band. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. They're young guys that are constantly in the public spot light.

True as that may be - isn't it stereotyping and assuming they are JUST bandwagon fans? For all you, or anyone knows - they could be being raised in a "Sabre household" who's parents and families watch the games religiously. We have no idea, nor should anyone assume or point the finger.
Take it for what it's worth - it's support for the team, as JLB mentioned.

fan of what? Putting a bad product on the ice? I will always love and support the bills and the sabres to the death (to a very large fault that even i know), but im under no dilusion that if ownership wont pull their part and put a good team on the field/ice than why should people shell out a bunch of money
A team doesnt need to necessarily perform well but it must provide a direction towards the future. Would you show up at ever Florida Panthers game? I highly doubt it.
Buffalo fans are great because they are a working class city who expects working class results. We want players that reflect the nature of our city and our people. We dont necessarily want the BEST always, but we want a team that plays their heart out. So no, what makes a TRUE FAN is not obsessing over the team no matter what happens. You want the team to be better and at least give 110% every night.
We have the best damn fans in the country but all we demand is players that reflect the same type of city and the same type of people that we grew up with. We are just a very hungry city right now, but when it comes down to it we just want the "hardest working team in hockey/football" to be proud of.
On that note, SABRES IN 7!

They'll remember this their entire lives. Like the people my age remember 75. And they remember the days when the French Connection, Bob McAdoo and OJ were all in Buffalo at the same time. And the kids now in their 20s and 30s remember the Bills of the 90s. That's how a collective conscienceness, community roots and shared experience take hold. The sports teams mean so much to everyone here, almost like a collegiate atmosphere in many ways.
Though the teeny bops screaming for Danny Briere at the airport were a little annoying. But hey, at least he's a clean cut upstanding citizen trying to do the right thing every day as a responsible person and role model for kids...

I agree. I have been a Sabres fan for almost thirty years. I have seen the best this Franchise has had in the Lindy Ruff era, and I have seen the worst such as in the Ted Sator years. Whatever the outcome of this series is I will still be a fan of the Blue and Gold. It will be sweeter though if we can win the series and see what we can do against the West Conference Champs.

I dont know bro, the way I see it is without us fans of the team good or bad there probably wouldnt be any teams here. If this city was made up of all bandwagon fans then we would not have a Football or Hockey team. Who would have supported our teams during the bad years??? the fans that only watch when the team is good? nope, because they are Bandwagon fans.

This city si 100& behind this club. It's really amazing the support the boys in blue and gold get. I know some of it is females who have crushes on some of the players. Jesus, good for them and us because they're fans, too.
I was at Root 5 a little while ago for game two, I think, and a couple of midle aged women sit in front of me and I was like, "Oh Jesus, these girls are just gonna gab about gossip at work and not even watch the game". I looked over to my buddy and he was nodding his head to as if he were reading my thoughts. I think these broads were doing some sort of a reunion because there was a whole group of them. While two of three stood off to the side and filled me right ear with indiscernible annoying gab, the two middle aged women sat dutifully in front of me with their mouths closed, except for when everyone cheered for a good play, and only asked a few questions to clarify what they didn't understand.
Now, I know they were there just because everyone else was, but they paid attention and didn't ruin the atmosphere like their friends did. Those broads may not have known a lick about hockey, but for those three hours they were hockey fans and acted like it.
This year affords causal hockey fans the chance to learn and get to know the sport so that for next year they will be true hockey fans.

I'm sure that when I started following the Sabres religiously in HS people thought I was a band wagon puck bunny.
It's a stereotype people put on female fans, which really sucks. How about you knock on the little boys as well? I KNOW there are guys out there with man crushes on the players.

You just defined a fair weather fan: "but im under no dilusion that if ownership wont pull their part and put a good team on the field/ice than why should people shell out a bunch of money"
All teams go through bad times, up and downs, not matter what the cause. That's when the true fans stay true, and support the team. They LOVE the team, and even when the team isn't good enough to compete for a championship or a playoff spot, you root for improvement. Cheer for the young players that are progressing.
Did I want the Bills to make the playoffs last year? Of course, but I was encouraged and excited about Losman and Evans development.
A true fan is someone who supports the team through good times & bad. The majority of Buffalo fans DON'T do that. Where were all these Sabre fans 5 years ago? We don't have the best fans in the country, not even close
You are a true bandwagon fan, and in 5 years when the Sabres have a downturn, you'll be no where to be found

5 years ago I was living in Virginia with my cat Sabre. Flying a Sabres (and Bills) flag on my apartment day in, day out. With the Sabres logo on my back windshield. In a silver car with the license plate I (heart sticker) SABRES with a car flag on every day. I had a dish so I could subscribe to the sports package AND Center Ice to get Rick and Jim on Empire. I drove to the 2 closest cities Raleigh and DC to cheer on my team. I spent winter and spring vacations driving back to Buffalo to go to games. I wore Sabres gear on EVERY game day. I did not miss a game on tv from 2001 to the lockout.
EDIT: I almost forgot I made EVERYONE around me pay attention to hockey and the Sabres. Including my students who adopted the Sabres as their team.
Yep, I must be a bandwagon fan. Especially since I'm one of those people who bought season tickets last year after the season ended...

haha to hear you call me a bandwagon fan makes me laugh awfully hard. I have lived and died by this team since I was a little kid. I dont see why the personal attacks are necessary I'm dont need to prove anything to some idiot on the internet.
But enough about me. People should get off their high horses and talking about how great a fan they are. I know it makes you feel good but its really getting old to see it on these forums every day. There is no rules on how to be a fan last time i checked. It is the height of egoism to claim that you are a "better" fan than anyone else. How in the world do you quantify that? Cant people just be casual fans also? Just cause they dont go nuts and obsess of the Sabres when they arent doing well doesnt mean that they arent a fan.
I'd also love to see you supply some facts though that "most people in Buffalo are bandwagon fans." Its funny that you think you can make a statement like that. There were plenty of fans while the sabres stunk, but many didnt want to shell out the cash to go see the team lose. Spending money on tickets does not make you a great fan. Anyways I love new fans it pumps me up to see people who arent normally in to hockey get excited about the Sabres. Why do people have to be so negative and self righteous?
haha and kudos to you Cutie I've done the same thing with my soldiers here in Germany! Whenever I get mad about something they just say "Go Sabres!" and they humor me when I talk about them nonstop. I actually got them watching the games too. But yeah we are bandwagon fans though huh

A legit fan- A fan who actually knows the history of the team, a fan who was there during the good AND BAD times, a fan who no matter what stood by his team and cheered them on no matter what. With out these fans, there would be no sports teams in Buffalo as we speak. Those fans that went to games during the bad times? legit fans.
A Bandwagon fan- A fan that started watching the team when the team was winning, AKA around January of 2006 for the Sabres, I remember during our 14 game win streak last year I went to the Washington game where we won 8-5, the attendence was 12,000, i could drop a pin and the whole crowd could hear it. A fan that doesnt even no anything about the sport nor the team. I cant tell you how many times Ive been to a game this year and the person next to me says " where did we get that Drury guy from?" ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? that person is a legit fan? ask 60% of the people that go to the Sabres game how we got Drury, Biere and Miller and i promise you they will have no clue at alll. I have a 16 year old sister that just became a fan this year because " they are good, and cute" she doesnt even knows the player names but is at the game right now. That is a real fan? comon dude, there is a such thing as a legit and bandwagon fan, take off the blinders bro.
