Earlier I was responding to a thread started by Chimp regarding Condi Rice and why she hasn't made any major treaties in her time as SecState. Well while answering it I researched the Mexican War of 1846-1858 and the entire current political situation is eerily similar. Lets discuss how the evil in the BA is seen in the Polk Administration because the actions of one imperialistic war are being repeated in another. Condi cannot negotiate peace because her boss, the president, wants war. Her actions with foreign leaders are much like those of John Slidell during the Polk administration. See Polk wanted to expand our borders so that our border with Mexico was the Rio Grande. Naturally this was nothing short of Mexico ceeding half of its territory to us. Polk was gearing up for a fight with Mexico because his WHIG predecessors had given him a huge navy and had also built up the federal army. So Polk, seeing that maintaining peace and stability required expansion and territorial acquisition, marched west. To ensure that Mexico would cede what is now the Southwest to us Polk needed war. To do this he got Slidell to negotiate terms of territorial succession that Mexico just could not agree to. This, in addition to the Annexation of Texas by the Republic made Mexico hopping mad because we were supporting and annexing a state that the Mexican officials saw as rebellious.
Now lets get to the where have we seen this before and how its linked to the current stupidity that we flung ourselves at in the Middle East. In late April, 1846 somewhere along the borderlands of Mexican Texas, keep in mind that at this date in history what constituted the state border between the USA and the USM was highly disputed. Well Polk needed an incident to bolster approval for a war with Mexico and so --in what became known as the Thornton Affair-- a company of American Dragoons (horse mounted infantry if you will) crossed into the disputed territory and encountered 2000 Mexican troops. Needless to say, and yes the Mexican army was extremely inept, 2000 beats 70 any time and the Americans were forced to surrender. This led to an uproar and conveniently, much like Bush's pre 9/11 plans for war, Polk had a declaration of war ready to send to congress for approval immediately after this occurrence. Polk was able to declare war successfully because American Blood had been On American soil as the 16 killed soldiers died north of the Rio Grande which Polk considered part of American territory.
Now for those of you who can't see how the **** this correlates to anything in our lifetime, well lets review shall we. On 9/11 terrorists were allowed to attack an American city and Americans were killed on American soil, So Bushfart is allowed to declare war on the ambiguous concept of terror and this means that Bush could invade Iraq, which according to several White House defectors, he had in mind since well before 9/11. Polk wanted war of imperialism against Mexico, to do so he needed justification in the form of American blood so he sent small raiding Parties into disputed territory to get the Mexicans to fire. History is indeed repeating itself.
