View Full Version : I miss the Sabres of the 90s

I've decided i hate Sabres fans and and i am one. I miss the old Sabres. You know the team i'm talking about. The team that had Wayne Primeau and Erik Rasmussen and Stu Barnes on it. The teams fans that weren't completely ignorant. Those Sabres teams didn't have bandwagon fans. The fans weren't cocky. They didn't just expect to win they knew they had to earn it. Those fans were knowledgable. Now all the bandwagon fans have no idea about the game of hockey. They criticize Leafs but act in the same manner. They disrespect opposing arenas on road trips. They make the city of Buffalo look like a joke and i for 1 refuse to be a part of it.

worst post ever, this team is way better than those teams. Those teams relied on one player to get where they were, this team has 4 solid lines, a very good goalie and a great fan base behind them.
These fans are not bandwagoners, i am on this board every day and they are all great fans.

The team is much better i agree. But i'm talking about the quality of the fans. The fans in my opinion were much better back then. They were more respectful towards other teams and weren't arrogant

Unnecessary.
I was a fan in the 90's and I am a fan now. I have never been more enamored with a Buffalo sports team than this team that we have now. Maybe last year's team a little more so, and then the 2000-2001 team...but anyways, this team is an extremely talented group, and if you can't respect that because some bandwagoners are ruining the experience, then you weren't a fan to begin with.

Good to see the hyperactive fan show up again. Good thing you were 10 in the "good old days". You were a real good fan back then I bet.
Every area has its own brand of fan. You can't go to some arenas without getting your head beat. I rather prefer the "at home we're nice and friendly, but on the road, look out" style of the present-day Buffalo fan.

There are game nights where I detest some of the fans in the arena. I go to over 95% of the home games and all playoff games. I have been going to games for over 10 years now. The "bandwagon" fans are quite annoying. It's ok to cheer your team, get into it, have a few beers. I am in my 20's so it's not like I'm some old lady complaining about the kiddos.
Who knows what it is. Perhaps they only get to go to 1-2 games a year because of the ticket demand, so they have forgotten simple arena manners? (saying excuse me when you want to walk past, waiting till a stoppage of play before you go to your seat, sitting down when the puck is dropped etc)
I'm at the point where I ONLY like my usher, security guard and the select few season ticket holders near me who don't sell out.

I was a bandwagon fan at one point. Granted I was five, but still. Everyone has to start somewhere. They're a good team, more people are going to like them than when they are a sucky team. It's only logical. Get over it, and enjoy the run.

So I am to "respect" the jerk offs who TRY to "ruin my experience" just because the team is doing well? Makes NO sense. And I suggest you don't question people's "fan loyalty"...

Where were all these fans during 02-03? Even at the beginning of last season. Last year i went to a game i november and there was 13000 people there. Now you can't get a ticket! What happens when we're bad again? I guaantee we'll back down to not selling the area out. Please get off the bandwagon unless you're a true fan

Dude, the beauty of this Sabres team is that most of them were on the team when we absolutley BLEW. It's been wonderfully surprizing & amazing to watch the growing process for this team as as players into stars - a laughing stock to a dynasty.
If there are bandwagon fans, great, let 'em jump aboard. There is plenty of room.
I've been a fan of the Sabres for as long as I can remember and let me tell you, when I used to travel to a Sabres game at the MCI Center here in DC in 2001-03 and I'd be one of the 5 other Sabre fans there to now when I go to the Verizon Center and it's a sell out for the last place team in the league - and then I go in and it is 90% Sabres fans - I welcome all the support we're getting.
After so many years of national broadcasts shitting all over Buffalo, it's nice to be "popular" for once. Frankly, I think that so many of us are used to our teams sucking and being laughing stocks, that when we're finally one of the best & most popular teams our fans don't know what to do or how to act.

I don't mind people jumping on the Sabres Nation wagon. More positive cheers the better. What I do mind are people with no common sense.

Again, the team is going to sell more tickets when they're playing well than when they're not. How can you let bandwagon fans "ruin your experience?" I've been to about six games this season, and every game has been a great experience. You people LET other fans ruin your experience because you need something to bitch about.

This is a case of looking a gift horse in the mouth. The people who are most guilty of expecting a win based on talent alone are the Sabres themselves. Its the only thing that's held them back all year. During the regular season you can get away with trying to win a game in the last 10 minutes, but not in the playoffs.
However, singing good bye is presuptous and arrogant. So I'll agree with you a little bit.

You guys are right, we should be quiet and respectful to our opponents. In fact, we should just speak in hushed tones and be happy we have a team at all.
Instead of decrying the dopes, why not bring them in? Why not try to draw them in fully, so that they learn a "better" way? Nah, easier to just come on here and bitch about people.

Screw all this old school talk (old school for the 20 somethings anyways).
I'll take a team that should be winning almost every single game they play in the playoffs over a team that I would get violently ill with nerves and "are they gonna do it" willies prior to game time.
At least I can get mad at them after the game for not playing to their potential...instead of saying "whoa is Buffalo, the talent pool is only kiddie sized".
It's a higher horse you are going to fall off from...but I'd rather sit up there than look up dreaming, "man if we could only do it guys!"
I've been rooting for that underdog way too many times man.

Nobody said that. But to be drunk complete idiots, that know nothing about the game anyway, but went out and bought a new slug jersey or those cheap ass jersey shirts people buy, and just go to the game because the team is winning is just stupid. You can go to an opposing teams arena, have fun and be loud without being a total jackass to everyone around you and make yourself and the city look like douchebags.

I do agree with Chugs about the original premise. Bandwagon fans annoy me as well, especially ones who never watch the regular-season games but magically appear during the playoffs. To them, I say go away.
However, Chugs, don't let those people ruin your experience as a Sabres fan. They may be irritating, but just enjoy the team on the ice, and don't worry about anything else.

With the Sabres selling out every game this year, absurd merchandise sales to the point of months on a waiting list, Sabre nation showing up in droves in enemy territory and playoff tickets being scooped up immediately...I think you'll be hard pressed to find "playoff bandwagoners" this year.
If you guys are going to be pissed about those guys...you are about a year late.

Acoustic,
You misunderstand me. I'm not necessarily talking about bandwagoners who show up to the playoff games. Instead, what I mean is people who don't even care during the regular season but are all of a sudden in "Go Sabres" mode, watching the playoffs and pretending they were there throughout the 82-game struggle. That annoys the hell out of me, and I know a lot of people like that.
Either go through all or most of the 82-game season (all for me), or don't watch the playoffs. It may sound pompous, but to me, those people don't have the right to watch the postseason.
P.S.
Out of towners who don't have the Center Ice package have a valid excuse. But if you're from Buffalo and don't watch the regular season but care about the playoffs, you're lame.

It's not really the bandwagon fans that annoy me, it's the whole sense of entitlement that seems to be running rampant in Sabreland. They haven't won anything yet. Being confident in your team is nice, but there's such a lack of anticipation about this series in particular that bothers the hell out of me.
If people don't start looking at the team more objectively, they're setting themselves and this city up to be slapped in the face again.

The only thing that irks me is when fans think they know more than they do and they call radio stations and spout off things that just make us all look like idiots.
Before you pick up the phone to call an on-air show, know what the hell your talking 'bout. :End of Rant: :)
I say that even if they are annoying at times, bandwagon fans will become fans if they enjoy the ride. You are all welcome as far as I am concerned. This City feels good about itself and that is NEVER a bad thing. Stop trying to destroy a good thing. Do a shot and put on a smile if you feel a negative thought coming on. ;)

I would like to err on the side of caution...I for one don't feel entitled (but I understand your point), but watching these guys play the way they have, I have come to expect more from them...especially with the knowledge that a healthy Sabres club would have dominated the Finals last year. Regier and Golisano kept their promise, kept this team together and in fact, made it better than it was last year.
I love our chances, more than I ever have...but the playoffs can be a fickle point of resolve for any team left alive.
This will not be an easy road, especially after we get done kicking the crap out of the Islanders.
I enjoy these games more knowing we kick ass more times than not, then say, kicking ass only part of the time. :D

Yupp.... the way it was meant to be played.
Outdoor's nets are bigger, and the goalies wear practically no padding. I'll give you the breakaways, but indoor scores are generally higher than outdoor anyways.

Hey dude i know where you are coming from but this was a very poor way to express your feelings about some of the fans...first of all there were always bandwagon fans who expected this team to win, be it the 70's, 90's or presently, and they were always cocky...however this team is so much more talented than the team of the 90's...and i know you are upset with the fact that a bunch of people on here are freaking out about the loss...most of the fans today are the same fans of the teams of the 90's...back in the day of the teams of the 70' and 90's really much hasnt changed except those fans of those teams have gotten older...i have been a sabres fan since the days of Gilbert and the French connection, you are lumping all fans together...there is a difference between cocky and confident...and i for one am the latter...i know you are upset but really much is the same in the way Sabres fans act...we have always gone on road trips and support our team with respect...i was at the caps/sabres game a couple weeks ago and i have no idea what you are talking about...everyone was respectful, while supporting the sabres...all of your points are moot because you have no evidence to support your theories...sabres fans haven't changed, some have gotten older and there are new ones...but being a sabres fan for 30+ years i can tell you for a fact that this statement hold no water...so you need to calm down, and relax...the people on here who are freaking out because of the loss is normal...they expected pure dominance for 16 straight games...and like the Sabres these fans got a wake up call...this will be no easy walk through the park...this team will have to work for it...but this team is just as great if not the best sabres team to ever hit the ice. so relax and enjoy the ride

[QUOTE=SabreGirl;1625248]The only thing that irks me is when fans think they know more than they do and they call radio stations and spout off things that just make us all look like idiots.
--This is the same guy that sits behind me and yells "SHOOT! SHOOT!" within 2.5 seconds of each faceoff. Then, during powerplays he yells it twice as much.
As a whole, I kind of have to be thankful for bandwagoners.
ITs easy to spot the fans that start the playoff countdown in August (like most of us), as opposed to the guy that shows up with the immaculately sewn "Briere" or "Perreault" jersey (with the new number scheme) and KNOW that he is on the bandwagon, while I'm wearing my white 98 Practice jersey with "31" on it or my GREEN three year old (player worn) practice Jersey and fielding the questions about it. Sure I've got the new one, But Im not ready to wear it to every game--yet.
The bandwagoners are the ones (believe it or dont) that saved us from bankruptcy, they're the ones paying stupid sums for everything from jerseys to sabres medallions. ITs all about keeping up the Jones' for them. Thats fine, 'Cuz most of us loved the Sabres when it wasnt cool.
Let them keep fueling the merchandise sales and help the bottom line. I'll catch the light after the next loss while they're screaming about how much money they wasted on the tickets. I just giggle as they walk by.
We all know the faces, Sabre Nation is about the long march, liken it to Christianity, Let us not hold in contempt those who recently converted. The important thing is that they converted. If/when they convert back--then we can call 'em out. Trust me, I have my list and I know that many of you do too.
--Just keep reminding the false believers who they loved last year, or the year before.
Win, Lose or draw--Always a Sabres fan.

I guess the main concept of this is that people expect the Sabres to entertain them by scoring 7+ goals per night and to win regardless. These guys are only human....they will have their ups and downs, and as I got flamed a few months ago for posting that Sabres fans that boo them are pathetic, it's true. The team is not going to play 110% every night and they will not entertain you every night. They will have their on and off days. Everyone in Buffalo just needs to relax. It is not the end of the world if the Sabres lose a game or even a series, as much as I hate to say it, and believe me, I am the first one in line for wanting the cup! But I realize that they are not bionic men. Just relax and enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Whatever happens, happens. Go Sabres!

Good post, Southside!
We were ALL bandwagon fans at one time. I got hooked because of the awesome location of my sister's boss' tickets. I went kicking and screaming to the Arena on a freezing, icy March afternoon and when I descended the stairs to Row 4 and saw Jason Dawe and Matt Barnaby about five feet from me -- I had season tickets the next season and never looked back. I was definitely a bandwagon fan who had been to a few games here and there as a kid, but this was different -- this was the new Arena and you definitely felt more part of the action (IMO) and I was sold the minute I went to my first game in person at (then) Marine Midland.
We all have to start somewhere. Some of us are just more quiet than others if we didn't know what we were talking about...!

I'm with ya Sabregirl.....Never mind what the puppies say.
Whether you started at the heels of a rabid parent (like I did) or whether you came in "kickin and screamin" devloped Stockholm Syndrome (just kiddin) and never looked back.
We all know the fake fans, as a matter of fact they are usually the ones screamin the loudest, demonstrating thier lcak of knowledge at the top of their lungs....
In any event, one of these evenings I will infiltrate the Isle's board with some surreptious name like "BSMITH80" or some such nonsense, then I will surreptiously instill doubt amongst their ranks and until Even if they win (which they wont) they will feel as if they have no reason to be there.
..And so it goes (tip of the old Sabres cap here to Mr. Vonnegut-you will be missed).

I think you're bringing the same haughty pretensions to a hockey team that insufferable indie rock nerds bring to bands that suddenly become popular.
I think the fact that these "bandwagon fans" are willing to travel to away rinks to catch a game is a testament to their loyalty to this franchise. There are bad apples in any fanbase, but you appear to construe the bad apples with the bandwagoners.
The growth of a fanbase has its detriments, but on balance I couldn't be happier with the fact that we're such a well-traveled group.
With that being said, I'm heading over to the Nassau Coliseum now. I've endured a 5 hour bus ride from Ithaca to NYC, about 25,000 inches of rain that soaked my bag and its contents, and a sketchy laundromat to dry my Miller jersey. I want to see a win. Let's go Buffalo.

I'm proud of you for going through all that! Enjoy the game...
btw...I meant no disrespect about calling everyone bandwagon -- Southside thanks for the clarification. I didn't mean that people were not fans and had to be swayed -- I mean we all had to start somewhere. Whether it was your parents, grandparents, friends, etc we all knew about the Sabres and we all followed them, but when you get hooked -- you get hooked hard. I just don't think that is an instant thing for most fans since hockey is a difficult sport to understand at times.
I kind of find it hard to believe that every hardcore fan came out of the gate obsessed with this team. That's all I'm saying. When I was growing up, we had no girls in the neighborhood, so me and my sisters "played" with the boys and participated in what they did -- playing hockey, basketball, baseball, army, you name it. I thought I 'loved' the Sabres back then when we made up songs about the players to the 12 days of Christmas melody etc. I knew the Canadian National Anthem from watching games by the time I was 10. That's nothing compared to what happened to me once I attended my first game.
However, if I'm wrong and you came out of the womb the hardcore fan you are today, I apologize. :n4clapping:

Yupp.... the way it was meant to be played.
Outdoor's nets are bigger, and the goalies wear practically no padding. I'll give you the breakaways, but indoor scores are generally higher than outdoor anyways.
Hey the natives invented both, just one before the other :D. Im a fan of both though, I just love the sport. Cheers man.

Yeah, I'm really longing for the days where Hasek would let in either one or two goals, and we'd still lose. Primeau and Rasmussen sucked. They couldn't manage to put the puck into a soccer goal (although Barnes was the man). I loved those 90's sabres teams, but I certainly don't miss that sense of hopelessness that would accompany the other team getting a two goal lead in the first. I don't miss having only one (two if we were on a real "tear") line that could do any real damage.
Any team that is good is going to have bandwagon fans (save for many of the southern teams). If the Bills start tearing it up next year, we're going to see a whole bunch of "hardcore" fans come out of the woodwork. Don't hate on this Sabres team for being a good team from top to bottom.

The problem is that these bandwagon fans aren't respectful of anyone else. They have no knowledge of the game and just want to be a part of a winning team. They give Sabres fans a bad name around the league. (I fixed your some of your spelling ;-))
un-founded bullshit. Just because some people cant put up the pocket scarp to make it to some games doesn't mean they are not fans. Good for you that you can use your disposable income to got o games. I applaud you for showing your support! Thats an unfair generalization. I'd rather spend 20 bucks and go to Root Five and be around a good amount of fans than to fork over 150 stones to make it to HSBC arena. Call me cheap, but shit, I'm a goddamn college student. What the hell is your problem? I'm from Angola but in my opinion, we're all Buffalonians and Sabres fans.

I never said that I let jack ass fans bring down my experience at games. All I said is that they are annoying game in game out when they never bother to learn simple game manners.
It would be a waste of over a thousand dollars if I bothered to pay attention to jerks. Sorta like listening to posts on message boards and taking them to heart...

maybe some people cant afford to put down a lot of money for tickets and would rather do so when the team is winning to potentially enjoy it more and perhaps there is nothing wrong with that?

Are you losers serious? "myahhh bandwagon fans suck...myahhhh" Shut the **** up.
So you liked the Sabres when they sucked...join the ****ing club.... i like the Bills when they suck too... If you're a casual fan who enjoys a game more when the team is winning who cares? There is a hierarchy to fandom now....just cause you can't wear your Jason Dawe jersey anymore you're pissed?
So more people come out to the games because the team is the talk of the town...big deal.
I honestly can't believe you dorks are bitching about the team you like being popular.... a couple of 20 year olds to boot.... you miss the 90's....you were like 8.
Post the pic's of all 45 ticket stubs of all the home games you went to or get ****ing lost.
Nothing pisses me off more than people bitching about who are fans, who are real fans, or who isn't a real fan because they didn't like the team when they were bad.
