All the pessimism and negative speak around here is getting a bit pathetic.
The Sabres played a crappy first 15 minutes last night and lost b/c of it, sure, no doubt. But let's not forget they beat the Isles 2-1 the remainder of the game, and it might have been by more if ol' DP didn't play lights out. And on Thursday the Sabres, while not playing their best, played much better than the Isles. The series is tied 1-1, big deal. Happens all the time and teams still win. If the Sabres win tomorrow night (particularly if it is more of a "Sabres" style win), all the momentum built up by the Isles from last night will gone -- it'll be tough for the Isles to well-up the energy to recapture the energy of Saturday night.
If the Isles continue to play the kind of game they played last night (which is the ONLY way they can attempt to win the series) a few things are likely to happen 1) the Sabres will exploit their agressiveness w/ speed and convert those opportunities into goals, 2) DP will make a mistake and let a few in (no way he plays like he did last night the whole series) and 3) the Isles will begin to p/u more penalties and give the Sabres increased power play chances (which in turn reduces the Isles' chances, of course).
To win this series the Isles need 3 games that are a carbon copy of last night. W/ the disparity in talent and speed, I doubt that is going to happen. And, if it does, the Sabres are a shell of the team we thought they were and don't deserve a Cup. If that's the case, then, so be it.
It's on.

They said it on either Versus or CBC when I was watching the games tonite.
I don't in any way think stats like that are relevant to individual series. But I had to say it.

Ok, even if true, what percentage of those split Games 1 & 2? My guess that the large % of that 71% also won Game 1.
Statistics are merely numbers and can be manipulated. Got to know all your facts and assumptions before making a judgement.

I might believe game 5 has that impact in a series tied at 2 games a piece.

Let's not forget that the last two times the Islanders were in the playoffs they split the first two games and then lost the next three.
From Yahoo Sports
"The Islanders failed to take advantage of similar situations in their previous two playoff appearances. They earned one road win in the first two games against Ottawa in 2003 and Tampa Bay in 2004, but did not win another contest after that in either series".

Which all means absolutely nothing in this series.

Hopefully that lose Sat. will wake the SABRES up and make them realize that they can't sleepwalk through the playoffs. Thier intensity level has been terrible, they can't take off for periods at a time and expect to bounce back all the time. Only one forward has netted a goal in 2 home games, that's terrible. I'll give DiPietro some credit for game 2, but the SABRES should of never let thierselves get down by 2 goals. There's no switch to turn on, they need to play intense hockey for 60 minutes, if they do this the Islanders shouldn't have a chance, but if thier gonna try to pick and chose when thier gonna play hard, they'll be in for a rude awakening. I trust in RUFF that he'll have this team playing "SABRES HOCKEY" the rest of this series and they'll take it in 5, they need to play like it's a game 7 every nite, because if they have a hard time getting by the Islanders (if) they'll have one hell of a time in the next round. I know that they can't hoist the CUP in April, but I'd like to see that thier on the right road.

I believe that games 3,5, and 6 are the most important in terms of momentum.

Not sure if that's true but I do know that 100% of the teams that go 4-0 in a 7 game series win.

That's true.
Make the playoffs and win your last game.
For that one you get the Cup everytime!!
