WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Millions of White House e-mails may be missing, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino acknowledged Friday.

"I wouldn't rule out that there were a potential 5 million e-mails lost," Perino told reporters.

The administration was already facing sharp questions about whether top presidential advisers including Karl Rove improperly used Republican National Committee e-mail that the White House said later disappeared.

The latest comments were a response to a new report from a liberal watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), alleging that over a two-year period official White House e-mail traffic for hundreds of days has vanished -- in possible violation of the federal Presidential Records Act. (Watch CREW's comments on the missing messages )

"This story is really now a two-part issue," CREW's Melanie Sloan told CNN. "First there's the use of the RNC e-mail server that's inappropriate by White House officials and secondly we've also learned that there were between March of 2003 and October of 2005 apparently over 5 million e-mail that were not preserved and these are e-mail on the regular White House server."

Perino stressed there's no indication the e-mails were intentionally lost, but she was careful not to dispute the outside group's allegations. "I'm not taking issue with their conclusions at this point," Perino said. "We're checking into them. There are 1,700 people in the Executive Office of the President."

i think it was on cnn yesterday that i heard there were laws put into place after the nixon fiasco that specifically required the wh to record all its correspondance. they were put into place for just this exact type of situation

so that would make at a minimum TWO serious situations now where the wh just completely disregarded existing laws. for now you could say maybe MAYBE this one was just pure unintentional incompetance, as opposed to the secret wiretapping which was completely intentional, but at least we must consider it part of a pattern

this is beyond impeachable.
will the public view this as intentionally erasing tapes?

has the impeachment fatigue threshold finally been breached?

can we signal the offical death of the mind ray for good?

stay tuned for our next exciting bat episode

I don't really care about Attorney Gate.

Of everything the Bush Administration has ****ed up, this has to be the least significant.

If the Democrats spent as much time and energy fact checking Bush's WMD claims as Attorney Gate, we wouldn't be at war right now.

BULLSHIT!!!

The "FBI Files" garbage was made up by the lying bunch of witch hunters...the GOP.

There is NO SIMILARITY!!!!

Bush and his cronies have deliberately used GOP e-mail accounts to avoid laws that REQUIRE ALL WH business to be done on official WH e-mail accounts...which is in and of itself a violation of federal law...and then they destroy e-mails anyway...which is another direct violation of the law.

Trying to say that "all presidents" do this is absurd.

Right wingers only have one response when their own are caught with their dicks in the zipper..."Clinton did it too".

Of course not. Democratic presidents have been, and will always be, pure as the driven snow. Only Republicans engage in malfeasance in office:

Only the small number of Republicans were guilty in Ab-Scam. The dems were framed.
Dan Rostenkowski was innocent.
Whitewater was no big deal
FDR didn't bait the Japanese into attacking us.
The FBi file scandal was bullshit.

You are as usual, acting like political hack. Stubborn. Do the honorable thing and quit pimping for the party.

i have to agree

to me this is potentially far bigger than the lawyergate thing itself. these are clear laws put in place to protect our country and its unconscionable that someone would think its unimportant

was there some underlying impropriety going on? i dont know, but you dont get to just ignore existing laws. its not like these are obscure hard-to-understand requirements, these are clear boundaries that are being broken

i can go to just about any business in america and get emails from three years ago easy. in fact its so easy that you have to think either the people involved are grossly incompetant boobs or theres something intentional going on

if we dont require our executive branch to obey laws we are leaving the back door wide open for exploitation and that absolutely threatens our country

for the life of me i cant figure out why more people are not very concerned about this pattern

Sorry Pete, but it is you that comes off as the political hack pimping for the GOP.

I never said that the Democrats were "pure as driven snow"...you are the only one that has said that.

In this case there is NO COMPARISON to what Bush's lackeys have done with millions of e-mails...NONE to what ANY administration has EVER done.

The FBI Files flap during the Clinton years was absolutely NOTHING...pure political witch hunt by the GOP. It was investigated to the nth degree...NOTHING THERE.

The Whitewater flap was absolutely NOTHING...pure political witch hunt by the GOP. It was investigated to the nth degree...NOTHING THERE.

Rostenkowski was a crook.

The Abscam snared members from both parties.

You forgot the check kiting scandal that since the Dems were in power was theirs.

FDR may have baited the Japs into war....but that was inevitable. It was not a scandal or an abuse of power. FDR may have told a fib or two during WWII...but it was NOTHING like what Bush has done in Iraq.

Iraq was/is a concerted and deliberate attempt to lie, mislead and exaggerate the capabilities of a very weak nation so as to conjure up it being a threat to the country so we could attack them.

WWII involved REAL threats from powerful enemies.

Your constant attempt to paint both parties into the same evil on every issue is absurd.

Some times the Dems are unethical and sometimes the GOP is. Sometimes one party is so over the top bad and break laws repeatedly that they have to be exposed for what they are...power hungry and corrupt crooks.

Bush has repeatedly shown to be more of a crook than ANY PRESIDENT IN US HISTORY!!!

Your may want to diminish the severity of his corruption...but that does not ring true.

Sometimes one party is so completely corrupt that they have to be exposed as such...the GOP of the last 10 years was one such party.

Try and play the "they all do it card" if you wish...it just makes YOU look like the political partisan hack trying to cover for one party over another.

I don't know what the law is regarding emails. (only Clinton and Bush Jr has dealt with them) If they are supposed to be saved and are now gone then there is a problem that needs to be resolved. It does disturb me that this is came out due to another Libby type witchhunt. (a crime is produced during an investigation of a non crime, DA bs)
The email thing needs to be resolved. It would be a bigger and more important issue if it wasn't preceded by 257 other investigations.
Maybe the tale of the boy who cried wolf is a better analogy.

Ohh. au contraire. When a dem is accused you knee-jerk right into spin mode.

Here's the point:

The most corrupt president in history is Nixon, a republican.

The second most corrupt is tough. Could be Bush, another Republican. More likely FDR. He lied to get us into WWII and we lost 100 x's more soldiers than this one. The "morality" of the war matters not. Lied or didn't lie.

So. Here's the difference between you and I. I am willing to admit that either a rep or a dem is corrupt as hell. I don't care because I am not married to a party like you are. I think they are all corrupt as hell. That's the difference. I won't prostitute my integrity for a party.
