View Full Version : Greatest Rock Song Ever: The Poll!
Matt
April 8th, 2007, 3:55:53 AM
Well we had 34 posts and a hell of a lot of entries, but it didn't seem like whoever created that other thread was going to get around to making the actual poll, so I figured I would.
I made ten selections, a fairly round number, and here was my criteria in choosing the ten:
1. Any song that was given a thanks or quoted for emphasis was automatically put in, that made up 7 or so of the 10.
2. Any song that warranted discussion, (such as Crossroads)
3. jlb's consecutive attempts to get a Buddy Holly song were factored in.
4. I tried to be practical. The earlier the nomination the more weight it carried, but a good nomination late was also considered, because the pickings were slimmer. Because of this, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" Beats out "The Ocean" by the skin of its teeth as the final choice.
5. If your song didn't make it, I'll include an Other option as the 10th choice.

Vote no on Stairway. You cannot vote a stolen song as the best ever. It's a good song, but I'm sorry.

As a former DJ, The best American rock song IS You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC. I know it was overplayed on the radio and weddings for some time, but I’ve never seen another song have a more consistent and powerful reaction on a crowd. And admit it, you at least LIKE the song.

eh, it's ok. But the lack of votes says these really aren't the best of all time. Comfortably Numb

I'm gonna get ripped for this but I'm a youngster so please be gentle- I choose Enter Sandman by Metallica. Yeah I know its totally produced and its not classic Metallica but damn, if I have to get pumped up, I rock out to Enter Sandman. From that incredible build up in the beginning of the song to the BOOM near the end, Enter Sandman amps me up like no other rock song.

If you're gonna go new:
The world is my expense
The cost of my desire
Jesus blessed me with its future
And i protect it with fire
So raise your fists
And march around
Don't dare take what you need
I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or i'll drag you to your grave
I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name
Sleep now in the fire
The lie is my expense
The scope of desire
The party blessed me with its future
And i protect it with fire
I am the nina the pinta the santa maria
The noose and the rapist
And the fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of hiroshima
The cost of my desire
Sleep now in the fire
For it's the end of history
It's caged and frozen still
There is no other pill to take
So swallow the one
That made you ill
The nina the pinta the santa maria
The noose and the rapist
The fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of hiroshima
The cost of my desire
Sleep now in the fire

I put it up there because you posted a listless line of Holly ditties and I thought I'd respect the groanless one.

I voted for Zepplin because they are my favorite band but Stairway is not even their best song but they are all so good...my favorite album is probably 3, houses of the holy, and physical graffiti...damn i love that band...to bad they can never get back together...as Jimmy Page and Robert Plant has always said...their is no Led Zepplin without John Bonham...Led Zepplin died the same day John died.

I voted for the Stones. It's not my favourite, but if you're talking rock it's the perfect song.
Stairway, for example, is a brilliant (and overplayed) song, but it has also folk and progressive elements.

That's almost as big a crime as Led Zeppelin blatantly stealing the song in the first place. Hey, maybe we should have Milli Vanilli on the list.

Ru,I understand what you are saying....but ,the fact is zeppelin Made it the
best song of all time.
It was my class song "1984" and that was years after it came out.
My 16 year old loves the tune done by zeppelin....its a timeless tune and
will be around for our kids-kids.

Excellent Song!!

All excellent songs! My fav band of all time is Zeppelin too. From the minute I heard them -- I was hooked. However, I also agree that, although Stairway is an amazing tune, it's not my fav Zep tune. In fact, the songs that are most played (Stairway, Rock and Roll) usually aren't big Zep fans fav songs. My fav is the No Quarter. I also like Black Dog, Immigrant Song, Battle of Evermore and Tangerine. Hell, who am I kidding? I like nearly every one! :D I love albums 2 and 3 the most.
My dream would be for Jimmy Page to play Dazed and Confused just for me. He will always be my absolute fav musician.
For more recent great songs, I second Comfortably Numb and add There, There and How To Disappear Completely from Radiohead. Don't like all their stuff, but these songs blow me away.
OK -- so I can't make up my mind to save my life. I'm female and that gives me an excuse. :)

shit, i forgot about this thread. I agree with Ru that Stairway to Heaven cannot win based on the fact that it was ripped off. Tied with 8 votes is "other" which can't win. So it looks like Allman Brothers, "Whipping post" is the winner, which is good by me. Great tune.
