I can understand how when the Saint Nicholas who in celebration of the birth of the Savior would share gifts with the less fortunate children of the town - somehow permeated into the fat WC Fields-faced jolly dude that has a magic sled, and slides down chimney's and delivers gifts with total values that exceed the GNP of probably at least 30 countries.
