I PM'ed Merc asking him about some new hardware that I plan on acquiring next week. Instead of answering he suggested that I toss it into the forum as it might make a good topic. So here's what I sent him.

I've already changed my HD's (replaced two 250 GB drives with a 320. Plan on another 320 later on) and my monitors. (The 22" Viewsonics are amazing).

The proposed memory is MHz of course. LOL

OK. Let's hear your opinions.

Budget for new case, power supply, uP, DDR2, and Video card is $2,400 total.

Can you think of better for that coin? I have an AMD based mobo so I am sticking with AMD. Sorry Merc, them and Intel leapfrog all the time. I expect AMD to make a move soon.

"New" is what I plan on buying.

Crap. The Thermaltake chassis is probably a no go.

I don't think that it supports an AM2 socket. Help! I can't seem to find a decent water cooling kit that supports the AM2 socket.

You guys have any tips?

Looks like a great build and a healthy budget. Some recommendations:

Case: I am glad that you can't get the Thermaltake. It is a fine case but underwhelming. I would suggest that you take a look at this beast. http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193&products_id=4428&zenid=10d5177bd0079f9bdc7bf2958d725777

Absolutely it is pricey but the components are top notch and Lian Li makes some of the finest cases in the world, and of those the G70 is arguably the best. This case and the rad pre-installed is an investment that would serve you for years to come. I guarantee that you will smile lovingly at that Lian Li everytime you see it. they are elegant and refined cases and i wouldn't build in anything less.

mobo, CPU, memory: Go for it, that mobo will accept the next gen CPUs. The only suggestion I would make is if you sre getting a top-notch watercooling system then feel free to save some money on the CPU. Pick one that runs slower but has the same cache and then overclock it. Sacrifice a couple hundred here for that case and a decent pump. You'll make it up on the other side. As for the memory I have the Corsair TwinX2048 6400C4 with Micron chips. It is screaming along at DDR975 right now 44412 2T at 2.3v Beautiful stuff.

Video Cards: I like overclocking my own and will always find the secret cards that hold good chips but sell at standard prices. The only way to do that now is to buy used. The reason is that when the 8 series first came out, Nvidia did not allow any overclocking by their partners so all those pick of the litter chips were out there running at normal speeds. Overclocking is now allowed and the parttners get the good chips. So, if you can find an early card you just may get a super chip at discount prices. This XFX 8800GTS I have can do 675MHz on water from a 513Mhz stock.

That's all I have to offer Pete. Looks like a great build.

Yep. Interested?

AMD 64X Dual Core, 2 GeForce 6800's. 2 GB 667MHz DDR2 (PNY)
I'll even toss in an unused ANTEC NEO 550 Watt Power Supply.

I've gotta find a MOBO as well. I've got one GeForce 6800 already so I wouldn't need that.

Find the best price for the CPU, the PNY and the power supply and I'll let you have it for 1/2 that price.

The stuff was bought in mid October.

Can't use the NEO with an ASUS mobo btw. They are not compatible.

Pete, the only thing that PC is missing is a vagina.
