Connolly Practices With Team
Nick Mendola - Monday, March 26, 2007 - 10:08 AM
(WGR 550) - WGR's Paul Hamilton is reporting that Tim Connolly skated with the Buffalo Sabres at Monday morning's practice, while Toni Lydman did not.
Lydman continues to recover from an upper body injury, while Connolly is again making strides toward a recovery from the head injury he suffered against Ottawa in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
In other news, Michael Ryan dropped down to the fourth line to practice on a line with Adam Mair and Clarke MacArthur, while Ales Kotalik joined Chris Drury and Dainius Zubrus for practice.
Keep it locked at WGR Sportsradio 550 for all your Sabres news and notes.

Good to hear Ales is back out there too - he should be a bigger contributor than Timmy for the near term.

As jheigl posted in a thread a little bit lower, Garth from Hockeybuzz seems to think that Connolly could play against Montreal or Pittsburgh.
I will be at the Pittsburgh game. Oh man.

I really like the way a Kotalik-Drury-Zubrus line sounds. Some tough boys to play against. They can all be very strong on the puck. I would expect a lot of cycling down low and puck control in the corners with one of them eventually winning a battle in front, getting a pass, and pumping it home.

Ales on the power play will be a nice sight to see.

I heard Paille is ready to come back to. If Paille and Kotalik are back we can finally send MacArthur and Ryan down to Rochester. I appreciate what those 2 have done to help the team, but in my evaluation they are still only AHL players. MacArthur had 1 or 2 good games and a bunch of games where he was non-existent. Ryan, on the other hand, has the work ethic and speed for the NHL, but hands of stone. I think Ryan won't be in Buffalo next year, but may have shown just enough to catch on with a bad team.
For the time being...

I don't think Connolly will be back by Saturday or Tuesday. Doesn't he have to be cleared for contact first? That has to be another week. My guess is not this Saturday but next Saturday or Sunday.

He has to be cleared for contact, but his "return" will really only be a few minutes on the PP.
Actually, I don't know that I'd want him to come back against the Pens because of the presence of Jaarko Ruutu who wouldn't hesitate to try to take out Connolly.

good point, ruutu is lethal, but very effective. much better than i thought he would ever be. He would destroy connolly if i got the chance, rightfully so too.

there will always be the possibility that someone's going to be on the ice the same time Connolly is, and that player will attempt to take him out.
Connolly shouldn't come back until he is fully prepared to protect himself when those situations arrive.
Lindy can't think about not putting him out there just because some other player is already on the ice.

If a clean player takes him out with a clean hit, so be it. I just don't want to unecessarily expose him to dirty players like Ruutu and Tucker taking him out through a dirty hit.

well tubist, you can't protect him forever. eventually tucker will come looking for him if he keeps his head down. And mair would do the same to darcy.

no doubt Tucker would take the opportunity to put a hit on Connolly. Luckily we won't have to worry about that until next year since the leaves only have a few games left now.

very true pigpen, although you never know.
i doubt they make it but if they do it would be Buffalo.
you know i would love to see Tucker catch someone clean, you would love it too. i would not want to see anybody get hurt though.

he doesnt need to score a goal immediately to help this team...his mere presence will do tons for their morale right before the strectch run here...i believe he is the final piece of the puzzle.
