hey guys, not here to argue about anything just saying that i really like the fact that the ref thought Briere dove and instead of giving 2 penalties just gave one. I really think that call needs to be made more often, it really punishes the diver and might prevent him from doing it again. We need more of that. had you seen it happen before? i never have, it was always 2 guys that went to the box.

too bad it was wrong guy they sent to the box

I could never understand why they call 2 penalties, becuse if the other guy tripped him then he didn't dive etc....Now back to the Briere "diving penalty" CBC showed the replay and Briere was clearly crosschecked but they called Briere...the Refs sucked anyways

i do think briere dived, but i also think carlo cross checked him. My point is i loved the fact the ref said, "F the cross check, you dove and tried to trick me, i am only taking you" not a direct quote obviosuly. haha. the refs were average at best, they had a few bad calls on the sabres, stajans trip early on was missed big time. but they also missed vanek tripping antropov.

What I don't understand is how they got Briere for diving, then GOT HIM AGAIN for cross checking when he did the exact same thing later in the game.
Inconsistency is the only consistency. It's depressing.

yeah he cross checked steen but steen did not embelish it, you gotta admit that briere did dive on that, he threw his head back. i just think it was a good job on that play by the ref, gotta cut that stuff out.

Come on, duff. I'm not arguing whether or not it was diving, which it was... I'm saying Briere nudged Steen and Steen went flying. You can't be suggesting Steen had to fall there, can you?

ah i see, sorry boss i didn't understand what you were saying. Yes i think steen fell over very easily, the problem is briere has the repuation and the refs know it.

The funny part about this post is bduff tried to throw it in an earlier post and obviously didn't get the flame war he desired.
Why not make a whole thread about it? That should work.

well it was a big step forward for refs i felt. i didn't knwo they were allowed make that call. not a flame war at all, i hope they call it on Tucker too next time he dives.

See, you say things like that but then as was already pointed out in this thread you defended Steen for his identical dive later on in the same game.

dude it was not identical at all, briere threw his head back, it was way worse. steen fell over for sure but it was not a mockery like brieres. Falling over to get the call is something almost everybody does, firing your head back and screaming is what he got called for. It was hilarious, tucker does it too. It was a good call, steen has no rep for it all.

He was screaming? You heard him? Having spent part of last night in a mosh pit, it's not that hard to get your head snapped back. I suppose you're going to trust the refs on that one, even though elsewhere you admit they're horridly inconsistent....

yeah, but you are missing my point. i liked the fact that HE FELT IT WAS A DIVE, he made the call and stuck with it. Basically he was telling the guy he thought dove that he will not tolerate it. i liked it, i want to see more of it. guys are still doing it but not as much, calls like this will prevent Briere ever doing it again. Come on guys, we all know he is a little theatrical at times.

1. Good for the ref for calling just a dive this one time. Good luck ever seeing any sort of consistency surrounding diving much less any other penalty.
2. Who cares if he's theatrical? I love that "rep" nonsense. Don't you think little players like Danny, Roy, St Louis, etc, have to embellish to get the attention of the damn refs in the first place?
bduff54
March 26th, 2007, 12:42:21 PM
gimme a break man, you like it when Tucker dives around all over the place? No you rip him apart. How come other smaller players aren't diving everywhere? wellwood, kariya, gionta. i don't see those guys doing this crap all the time. Yeah he has a rep for doing it and thats what happened on Saturday. Do you not think it was fair for him to go to the box for that? i do. I love soccer and that game has been ruined by that crap.

How about if they don't call diving at all, won't that let the players know that it's futile to try and they're only taking themselves out of the play when they do it?
Also,I still don't understand how you can have a trip and a dive called on the same play. Maybe they need to change it from Unsportsmanlike conduct diving to what it really is: unsportsmanlike conduct embellishment.

huh? by not calling diving at all the players will continue to dive more and make it look like they got tripped or hooked. it would only make it worse.

Bduff, all you're doing is echoing the sentiment of the CBC broadcasters word for word.
Borrrringggg.
The way I see it, if someone commits a penalty, NO MATTER WHAT, they should go to the box. If someone dives on the play, they can go to the box too. How does someone diving on the play change the fact that the other player committed a penalty? Since when is diving worse than committing any other penalty? I think what you (Don Cherry) think about that type of thing is ****ing ridiculous. Which is why the other announcer kept saying "I saw a crosscheck." Respectful way of saying, you're friggin wrong Don.
Both should get penalties, a dive should never erase a penalty. And with the significant advantage you gain during a power play, diving will never be erased. Unless they start calling it on every penalty, because frankly, everyone embellishes to draw penalties. Some players are just better actors therefore they can stage fall better.

That would have been fine except for the fact that he was cross checked from the back and went down. No dive if you ask me.

I see your point, but my main complaint like others is consistency. Heck, if even Harry Neale questioned it, there's something to it. ;)
Walkom has to do a better job. He seems like he's hiding in the HQ in Toronto or NY. I hate diving as much as I fear a return to the clutch and grab. That responsibility falls on the zebras.

Why? It's not gonna stop people from diving.
Only way they'd stop people from diving is by making it a 5 minute major or something. I wouldn't be against that, but calling people for diving and not the people who committed the original penalty REGARDLESS of the embellishment is not really good for the game. It's putting a hierarchy on minor penalties which should not exist.
Your reasoning for liking this type of action is just weird. In your eyes it's the ref taking the dive personally and ignoring the other obvious penalty on the play. How does that make sense? Like refs need any bigger egos with their three blind mice tactics they've been showing these days...
The REAL Sabres

(Of course I've seen it before, and it's "dove" bduff, "dove".)
How come diving wasn't an epidemic 10 years ago? All of the sudden players started to dive and someone had their panties in a bunch.
That would have been fine except for the fact that he was cross checked from the back and went down. No dive if you ask me.I know really! A cross-check he didn't see coming. He had an instant to react yet he threw his head back and apparently screamed, to draw the call?
Next thing you know, players are going to take falling lessons. If they don't fall properly, it's a dive. They also need to be one with their body and have a 360° plane of vision. Give me a break.

Do divers still get a letter & threat of fine from the league after a couple of diving minors have been called against them?
I seem to remember they implemented that shortly after the strike ?
