CBS News Exclusive: New Finding in Pat Tillman's Death

Pat TillmanWASHINGTON (KCBS) -- CBS News has learned that an investigation by the Pentagon inspector-general into the "friendly fire" death of San Jose's own football-star-turned-soldier, Pat Tillman, will blame nine officers, including four generals, for failing to follow regulations and using poor judgement in a series of missteps that kept the truth of how he died from his family for more than a month.

From her home in San Jose, Tillman's mother, Mary, told KCBS that the Pentagon has not contacted her, and that the investigation's conclusions were "absolute news to me." She declined further comment. Pat Tillman, a San Jose native, graduated from Leland High School.

The official version of his death was that the former NFL player had died in a firefight with the enemy in Afghanistan. It was only after a nationally televised memorial service that Tillman's wife and parents were told he had been mistakenly shot by one of his own men.

Until now only the soldiers who were part of Tillman's unit of Army Rangers have been disciplined for the events which resulted in his death. It will be up to the Army to decide what if any disciplinary action will be taken against the nine officers.

Following the events of 9/11, Tillman turned down a $3.6-million contract with the NFL Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army in May, 2002. He fought in Iraq, then Afghanistan, where he died in April of 2004.

Tell me why Tillman's family should "let it go",upps.

Do they not deserve the truth-the full, ugly truth of how he died? Not the sanitized version of same that right now no one believes?

Yeah, nevermind that they used him as a propaganda tool not only in life but even more in death. What they did to Tillman is disgusting and I hope somebody pays a price for it. I'm not counting on it though.

Upstart, what is the matter with you? Let what go, a crime that resulted in the death of an American soldier? What an awful thing to say.

Friendly fire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For other uses, see Friendly Fire (disambiguation).
Friendly fire (fratricide or non-hostile fire) is a term originally adopted by the United States military in reference to an attack on friendly forces by other friendly forces,[1] which may be deliberate (e.g. incorrectly identifying the target as the enemy), or accidental (e.g. missing the enemy and hitting "friendlies"). Friendly fire is contrasted with fire originating from enemy forces ("enemy fire"). In a friendly fire incident personnel may be killed, or material assets may be damaged or destroyed. Friendly fire is one kind of collateral damage. The term friendly fire is also a classic oxymoron and a military euphemism.

The U.S. and British military refer to these incidents as blue on blue,[2] which derives from military exercises where NATO forces were identified by blue pennants, hence "blue" and Warsaw Pact forces were identified by orange pennants

Frag (military)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

For a type of grenade see fragmentation grenade.

Frag is a term from the Vietnam War, most commonly meaning to assassinate an unpopular officer of one's own fighting unit, often by means of a fragmentation grenade. A hand grenade was often used because it would not leave any fingerprints, and because a ballistics test could not be done (as it could to match a bullet with a firearm). A fragging victim could also be killed by intentional friendly fire during combat. In either case, the death would be blamed on the enemy, and, due to the dead man's unpopularity, it was assumed no one would contradict the story.

Fragging most often involved the murder of a commanding officer or a senior noncommissioned officer perceived as unpopular, harsh, or inept. If a C.O. was incompetent, fragging the officer was considered a means to the end of self preservation for the men serving under him. Fragging might also occur if a commander freely took on dangerous or suicidal missions, especially if he was deemed to be seeking glory for himself. The very idea of fragging served to warn junior officers to avoid the ire of their enlisted men through recklessness, cowardice, or lack of leadership.

During the Vietnam War, fragging was reportedly common. There are documented cases of at least 230 American officers killed by their own troops, and as many as 1,400 other officers' deaths could not be explained[1]. Incidents of fragging have been recorded as far back as the Battle of Blenheim.

I'd rather have the raw truth than a lie about being killed gloriously in combat.

Ummmm I'd like to know what kind of people would rather have a lie concerning a family member's death rather than the truth?

Who are these people?

Are you trying to imply, you're one of these people?

Why would they lie?

Maybe to cover up a politically motivated murder?

What an awful idea.

That's not what I asked.

I asked a very simple question.

If you died, would you want you family to know the truth of how you met your end or a lie?

No I'd want them to think I was killed gloriously in combat

defending my country...then I'd want them to move on with

their lives and let my memory rest in peace

Appearance is more important than reality, sometimes.
