View Full Version : Edwards: Honest, or just PR?

So, with the Mrs Edwards cancer story...

Is it on the up-and-up? She has inoperable cancer, but she wants him to keep going, etc? Is it that she really doesn't want him to give up on his dream?

Or is it a fairly transparent PR move, to try to connect Edwards with "common" folk?

I'm inclined to believe it's all calculated (other than the actual "having cancer" thing - unless that's not true either!), except that the calculation is so transparent......

She's gonna tank rapidly and he can't run. Could be a VP choice again however.

Maybe, maybe not. This morning they were saying it's "treatable but not curable" on the Today show. I guess that means she could live quite a while before checking out.

Would he bother with a VP run again? I don't know about that either - he's lost that once, might not want to be in that sitcheeation again for fear of another loss wiping out his chances of ever being Prez.

I understand your cynicism, anEin, but I choose to believe the Edwards are being honest and truthful about the disease, rather than using it to manipulate voters.

I am confused, are you, anEin, the first person to make this accusation or has someone else floated this idea?

I think the story is legit, he might use it to garner sympathy votes but I think at best he runs as a VP candidate.

I don't know if anyone else has floated it - probably. But I don't know what that has to do with anything.

But I see where a guy like Shivvy could come up with a reasonable conspiracy - Edwards is really the 3rd guy in right now and getting beaten up by Clinton and Obama. A little cancer scare spun the right way gets his name in the news, makes his wife look heroic, makes him look more "noble". I don't really believe that, but I can see it.......

I hope you're right, Rob.

Gibby, I take it then that you disagree that him running for VP is a real danger to his chances of ever becoming the Prez?

I don't see the sense of it. Who will vote for a politician because his wife is dying?

You think people are so stupid, older people and women, that they will vote for some guy because a relative is dying? People voted for Clinton who hate Hillary, people voted for Carter despite is brother, people voted for Bush II despite his wife.

Many black people will NOT vote for Obama despite the fact that he is black.

Wouldn't you think people would vote based on his stances?

Of course your kidding lol.

Carter was going to win even if his brother blew him at the convention.

BushII wife was a plus her or heintz are you ****ing kidding?

Obama is Black but many view Clinton as their first Black president and Hillary would use him.

Thanks. I meant a person in a position of influence though. Seems a little too cynical a ploy to me for the little possible payoff it could yield.

Something like that. I read it yesterday and didn't bother to post it.

Why bother? You know the right will use it the way they used Wellstone's funeral.

That is why I could not work in politics after school. What kind of mind do you have to have to even think such a thing about a person? It tells me that your mind works that way and makes me dislike even being near people like that.

But then we have been through my naivete problem previously.

You got that one backwards the left used his death and it cost them.

I don't think he'd support him so much as help make sure he didn't miss the bowl by holding him closer to the target, in that case.

Jill Porter | In light of wife's cancer, Edwards should step aside

IT'S INEVITABLE that John Edwards' decision to continue running for president while his wife battles incurable cancer will become grist for political debate.
The focus, of course, should be on Elizabeth Edwards and the cruel misfortune that's haunted her otherwise-privileged life. The couple lost a teenage son in a car accident, and she survived a previous bout with breast cancer.

Now, at 57, with young children to raise and the potential prospect of becoming the nation's first lady, she has inoperable cancer and a grim prognosis.

Her doctor said it was Stage IV breast cancer that's now in her bones.

But the campaign goes on.

"From our perspective there was no reason to stop," John said at a news conference yesterday.

The announcement came as a surprise:There had been widespread speculation that Edwards would suspend his campaign to be there for his wife.

And, forgive me, but here's the inevitable commentary: Frankly, that's what he should have done.

Think of it this way:

What if the candidate were female?

What if it were, say, Hillary Clinton?

Can you imagine the uproar?

She'd be crucified as a heartless, selfish, cold bitch who put her own ambition above her responsibility to her family.

And perhaps rightfully so.

I don't necessarily think that John Edwards is heartless, selfish or cold - or that he's exploiting his wife's illness for the sympathy vote, as some cynics believe.

So wait, it could be the "right" using the decision to keep going as ammunition to say "look at how sneaky those lefties are"? But then, it could be the left saying, "Watch how the right twists things around, look how evil they are"... the spinning might never end, really.

This is why I studied politics, not practiced it.

And, as I said, Fins suck, yes, but the Bills blow.
