HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (March 15, 2002) -- Free-agent guard Dave Szott fulfilled his dream of playing near his New Jersey home for family reasons, signing a three-year contract with the New York Jets.
Szott has a child with cerebral palsy that receives treatment near their New Jersey home. As a result, Szott wanted to sign with either the Jets, New York Giants or Philadelphia Eagles.
The 34-year-old Szott will move in at left guard for the Jets, replacing Kerry Jenkins, who signed a five-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this month.
After playing 11 years for the Kansas City Chiefs, Szott played for his former Chiefs coach, Marty Schottenheimer, with the Washington Redskins last season.
