FOXBORO, Mass. (March 15, 2002) -- Adam Vinatieri, the New England kicker whose 48-yard field goal as time expired gave the franchise its first Super Bowl championship, signed a multi-year contract.
The team said it was retaining his designation as their franchise player for the 2003 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Neither the team nor Vinatieri's agent, Neil Cornrich, would disclose terms of the contract.
"Both the Patriots and Adam are excited," Cornrich said. "Adam is looking forward to having the opportunity to remain a Patriot the rest of his career."
Vinatieri, 29, was instrumental in the Patriots' improbable playoff run, hitting a 45-yard game-tying field goal and a 23-yard game-winner in driving snow in the Patriots' 16-13 playoff win over the Oakland Raiders. He had five game-winning field goals last season.
The team's regular kicker since 1996, Vinatieri has 688 career points, the third-most in franchise history. He has converted 160 of 199 regular-season field-goal attempts and 206 of 211 extra points.
