JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 18, 2002) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free agent wide receiver Patrick Johnson on Monday, hoping to bolster an offense that finished 22nd in the league in scoring.

Johnson had 58 catches for 898 yards and seven touchdowns in four seasons with Baltimore. Originally a second-round pick in 1998, Johnson spent the final 12 games last season on the inactive list with a broken left collarbone.

Johnson, who also returns kicks, caught five passes for 57 yards in four games last season. He had his best season in 1999, catching 29 passes for 526 yards.

Johnson is the first unrestricted free agent signed by Jacksonville in two years. Terms were not disclosed.

Johnson's signing comes at a time when the Jaguars are seriously considering letting go Keenan McCardell later this offseason. Teamed with Jimmy Smith, McCardell has been the Jaguars' No. 2 receiver for the past six seasons.

Also Monday, Jacksonville re-signed wide receiver Micah Ross and signed offensive tackle Mark Bristol.

Ross had 150 kickoff return yards in five games last season. Bristol played with the San Francisco 49ers.
