View Full Version : CBC Hockey Night In Canada Petition

December 18th, 2006, 7:22:51 AM
I know you folks in Buffalo get CBC, I was there before.
We would appreciate if you could take the time to vote on our petition to get the CBC to be more diverse on it's hockey programming. Even in Alberta, the Toronto ML are the team they show week after week.
NoMoreLeafs.com - A site that requests that the CBC become more diverse with it's hockey programming. Includes an online poll, guestbook and discussion forum.
http://www.nomoreleafs.com/
This site is not an anti CBC, Toronto or Maple Leafs site.
Thanks

I'll vote, I hardly watch HNIC anymore because of this. I don't want to watch the stinkin' Leafs. Now only if they can start a petition in Buffalo so we don't have to get New York Giants games every stinking week.

lol, i love it. All of Canada hates Toronto. My cousin just moved to Calgary and everybody there hates people from the GTA. 99% of them have never even been to Toronto. it's about ratings, the GTA is the most populated part of the country and in there are literally millions of leaf fans. The ratings must be higher when you have the leafs games. do you really think Calgary vs minnesota would attract the interest of Ontario. I am not saying that the leafs games are better at all i am just saying that more people watch. I would rather watch Calgary vs edmonton any day.

LOL, when 30% of Canadian television sets are in the broadcast cachement of Toronto (i.e. within sight of the CN Tower) then guess what, CBC will continue to feature the Leafs as the early game on HNIC in English Canada because that's their advertising bread and butter. All other markets in Canada are inconsequential.
If you want to watch the Canadiens, switch to Radio Canada and watch it there...it's available (in French).
If you want to watch the Senators, then just slash your ****ing wrists now unless they're playing a western team in the second HNIC game.

there are only 6 teams, how much more diverse can they be? The teams outwest almost always play at 10:30 eastern time on Saturday and they split those games evenly. at 7:30 there are only 3 options, ottawa, montreal, and toronto. Half the bloody time the leafs play one of those teams on Saturday night anyway. This debate has been going on for leafs. You take the leafs off saturday night and put on the sens vs the islanders. The rating will plummet. ottawa has nowhere near the following the leafs have, the only team that would have a similar following is the habs and they are the french CBC.

If you are a true hockey fan you'll watch any game. Don't you think they'd capture a wider audience by televising premium games reguardless if a Canadian team is playing or not?

huh? are you suggesting they play like anaheim vs Buffalo? That would never happen, a lot of Canadians feel like the game has been taking away from the already, if the CBC (canadian broadcasting) started showing US teams it would be ridiculous. The tradition would be ruined.

Ducks vs. Sabres would be a great draw. Better than lets say Leafs/Bruins. You have 6 teams left, it's inevitable you will see American teams. Enjoy the game for what it is and leave the patriotism out.

there is no way that game would outdraw a leaf or habs game, it wouldn't even be close. i bet you a regular season leaf game would outdraw some stanley cup final games. it is not patriotism, it is the nations canadian network. TsN and sportsnet show american games all the time. CBC is for Canadian content.

Whatta bunch of babies, the Leafs play in Vancouver @ 4pm, don't turn on the tv until 7 pacific time, just like how I flip the channel @ 10pm Eastern, it's alot easier for me to do that than petition CBC to not show weast coast games.

CBC is based in Toronto ... The Leafs have an amazing fan base ... why would thy not put the Leafs on and like it was said before the play the Sens or Habs a bunch of times in these time slots. Also this past weekend CBC did a triple header with the Sens game on at 4 I believe.
Also 2 American teams on HNIC lol good one. Lets put a great CFL matchup on monday night next year spice things up lol

The CFL is still a minor league, you can't compare it to the NHL. With only 6 teams left in Canada, I'd expect people to watch hockey no matter who plays if you are a true fan.

i think you are being a bit crazy here, would you just watch any old football game if it was in the bills time slot? not a chance, you would go do something else. you give me anaheim vs San jose in the leafs time slot on a saturday night and i would never watch that game.
This issue has come up many times before and the people oppose HNIC showing so many leaf games never have any rational reasons for backing it up.

Last weekend (Dec 16, 2006) I was really hoping to watch the Montreal Canadians play Sidney Crosby. That would have been a terrific game to watch. However, the tradition continued and we got the Leafs vs Rangers instead. At least it was on in French.
So watch it in French, you whining, uneducated redneck.

You just assume everyone is a Leaf fan and they are not. It might be a problem reguarding too many Leaf games if it mentioned so many times. As I said before the show is hockey night in Canada, not hockey night in Toronto. Call it Hockey night in Toronto and you have a legit argument.

yeah but there are only 3 teams that are on at 7:00. Habs. leafs and sens. Habs are on french CBC and the leafs have way more fans than ottawa. Plus they play the sens quite a bit on saturday night. I am not sure you really understand the tradition of HNIC, if you did you would never have suggested they start showing 2 american teams. That would actually be a huge deal here. people would boycott the CBC.

So much for the love of the game. I still think it's wrong to assume that the Leafs are the biggest draw. It's like assuming I'm a Yankee fan just because I live in NY. That couldn't possibly be any further than the truth.

Is this thread a joke? I don't care if I dislike the Leafs or not. I would watch HNIC no matter who they're playing. And they do have alternate games don't they, or am I wrong? I thought it's like NFL, where if MTL is playing, MTL people get their game. Do they still get Toronto? Either way, HNIC is the best, and will always be the best hockey programming available.

December 19th, 2006, 8:13:54 AM
yes it is that way, people get what is in their region. if you live in ottawa or montreal you get there games. The complaints are coming from people out west, at 4 PM their time they are getting the toronto game because i guess the CBC figures that will attract the most ratings out there. It makes sense, Montreal is a french Canadian team, The sens have only been around 10 years or so. The leafs might be the best draw out there until their own teams play at 7 PM.

man i am not assuming that everybody likes the leafs but it is fair to say they might be the most popular team in the country. How are you not understanding that. It's like the yankees, most people hate them but they have a huge following and even the people that dislike them will watch them anyway in hopes they will lose. I know guys that watch leaf games just so they can see them lose. If you are HNIC in canada and you are going to put either Montreal, Toronto or Ottawa on TV out west, who do you pick?

Montreal.....tradition. Id say the Leafs have more hatred toward them, but Montreal is the closer comparison to the Yankees. Buffalonians may love to see the Leafs lose more because of the close proximity, but the appeal of watching the Habs is more popular in terms of tradition. Comparible championships to the Yankees, recognition, tradition. Canadian kids grow up dreaming of being a Montreal Canadian, not a Toronto Maple Leaf.

i agree that montreal is easily a bigger legacy because of there cups, but to see that kids don't grow up dreaming of being a leaf is hilarious. have you ever actually been to Ontario? Kids in quebec grow up dreaming of being a hab and kids in Ontario grow up dreaming of being a leaf. And then you throw in the east coast and all the transplanted leaf fans across the country. It might be close but the CBC shows the leafs games for a reason. do you think they haven't crunched the numbers?

I've been to both Toronto and Montreal. Youre showing that Toronto arrogance again. Compare the Habs to the Yanks and the Leafs to the Red Sox(painful to me being a Sox fan) both have tradition, but you dream of playing for the team with a legacy, not the perrenial runner up.

Believe what you want. Not everyone here is a Bills fan. You idolize someone for their accomplishments. Montana and Brady have championships and Kelly and McGahee dont.
