Defenseman Alexei Zhitnik was traded by the New York Islanders to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday for defenseman Freddy Meyer and a conditional third-round draft pick.
The move gives the Islanders some cap room. Zhitnik has two years and $7 million left on his contract while Meyer will earn just $525,000 this season and next.
Zhitnik joined the Islanders last year after playing 10 seasons in Buffalo. He has two goals and 11 points in 30 games this year.
Meyer signed with the Flyers in 2003 after going undrafted. In 83 NHL games the past three years, he has eight goals and 32 points. This season, he has two goals and five points in 25 games.

This forum is called sabres center ice. Zhitnik is not a part of the sabres organization anymore. Hence, it's the wrong forum. The correct forum is the Red Line. Thank you.

I think it'll benefit the Flyers.
Zhitnik's still a solid defenseman...I feel kinda bad for him though.
the Islanders were having a stand-out season and now Zhitnik gets to move to another team struggling to make .500

You can take the Clarke out of the Flyers, but they will always be the Flyers. Great move by the Flyers. Add a veteran who is passed his prime and a big salary, then wonder why your team still stinks next year. I love it.

Why is this such a bad move by the Flyers? Zhitnik can still skate and eat up minutes. I think its a move in the right direction as long as they arent just bringing in a name, and are trying to get guys that can skate.

It's a bad move because Zhitnik is expensive, getting up there in age and to get him they gave up a young prospect in Meyer. The Flyers already are too old, and they have too many bad contracts. They should want to rebuild, they're just hurting themselves and their future by doing this. I mean, do they Zhitnik is going to turn their season around? Please. That is why this is stupid.

Obviously you missed Sydney Crosby skating circles around him the other day. He isn't the same player he was when he was here. They are a horrible team and they need to scrap the heap and start over. That doesn't mean bring in a guy who will make 3.5 for the next two years and get older.

Guy, you need to quit your bitching, the thread involves a former Sabre and its true, nobody ever reads the other forum. This move both sounds like the Flyers and it doesn't. They like big, slow defensemen, Zhitnik is neither, but he is old and overpaid. When you consider they gave up a young defenseman and a pick in the deal you have to laugh, "Oh those crazy Flyers," almost like a Stan Laurel moment, lol. I was wondering where the Flyers got the cap space to make this move, then I heard they had waived Nedved again. Maybe the Rangers will grab him on re entry waivers, they love their aging overpaid Czechs.
