here's the oped:

A thousand federal agents swooped down on six meat-packing plants across the country and detained more than 1,200 people. In a news release, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the purpose of the raids was to bust an identity-theft ring.

So far, the numbers, according to the Denver Post, belie that claim:

“ICE said 65 of the suspects were arrested on criminal charges including identity theft, and the other 1,217 were held on immigration charges alone. ICE said the investigation is continuing and more criminal charges were possible.”

In Greeley, Colo., at the Swift & Co. plant, more than 200 workers were rounded up, put onto buses and taken to detention centers where many will be deported this week.

Swift & Co. had advance knowledge of the raid. They filed a petition in federal court to prevent it. A judge refused their request.

These employees are hard-working residents of our communities. Social security, federal, state and local income and unemployment taxes are withheld from their paychecks, whether they are in this country with or without proper documentation.

Many of them have children who were born in this country. These children are United States citizens with the same rights and privileges as all of our children.

When did it become acceptable to separate these children from their parents? Who will care for them? Why are they being made to suffer?

the executives of swift shoud be tried under the provisions of the RICO act. If they know they would go to jail they would be much less likely to flount immigration laws. THese "hardworking and honest" illegals were using forged documents that had been stolen from others. Maybe the ford foundation will feed them

About 1,000 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with search warrants entered plants owned by Swift & Co., of Greeley, Colo., charging that "large numbers" of workers illegally assumed the identities of U.S. citizens or legal residents by using their Social Security numbers to get work, ICE officials said.

Doesn't Moonie live in an apartment/condo on-site at one of these Colorado packing plants ?No, I live about 70 miles west. I could, however, arrange to be there when work let's out.

Having children is NOT a free pass for illegal aliens to suddenly become untouchable! I'm glad that we're finally clamping down!!!

Announcing the success of its massive "Operation Wagon Train" yesterday, DHS officials insisted the raids that netted nearly 1,300 arrests were about busting up an identity theft ring. The stats tell a different story.

According to DHS' own tally, only 65 of the 1,282 arrests were for criminal violations, including identity-theft related crimes. That means that over 1,200 of the people arrested had no connection to any identity theft rings, and were guilty only of run-of-the-mill immigration violations. That didn't temper the agency's rhetoric.

The RICO act does apply and if enforced the men in cities in Buffalo might not be out of work.If any of us steal or forge a document we go to jail. Why should they get a pass. If we become breeders do we get a free first felony??

And yet it is true... my grandmother was a legal immigrant from Sweden, my great grandparents were legal immigrants from Canada thanks to the Civil War, and my other great grandparents on my mothers side were legal immigrants as well.

Sneaking across the border at night or in a tunnel from Mexico and having a child or no IS NOT LEGAL IMMIGRATION and NEVER SHALL BE LEGAL IMMIGRATION. Why is that so hard for people to understand? There is no hypocrisy there, only facts.

no personal offense to you, RBF, but you can take your laws and stuff them.

"it is illegal" is the worst argument i have ever seen to justify a law.

Send her and the tot that she squeezes out back across the border. There is a reason why ILLEGAL immigration is illegal.

I don't want Mexico's poor. Let them pay for them.
