View Full Version : What is your favorite Beer?

March 12th, 2002, 12:29:29 AM
For those of us who are 21 (in the US anyway, we can't forget about our Canadian friends)

Mine:

Labatts Blue
Yuengling Lagger
Schmirnof (count as a beer?)

Sammy Smith: Nut Brown Ale

(NOT SAM ADAMS)

very tasty, very unique. and I recommend trying one if you get the chance

but when I'm drinking budget beer I usually go with Labatts Blue

Molson Canadian followed closely by Labatt Blue.

I'm glad there's a vote for Yuengling Lager...how that beer hasn't risen to national prosperity yet is a bigger mystery than the Bermuda Triangle.
That'd probably be my favorite if I had access to it more often...are you from Pennsylvania?

I had a couple of Sam Smith's at a bar in Ottawa. Very good beer! They also had a Jamacan beer, ican't remember what is was called (Dragon Stout??), but, it was really good. I also like Grolsch.

I actually toured the brewery (I used to date a girl from that town). It was amazing, but they actually answered the question you asked. Just until this past year, they were actually trying to stay small. They recently opened a brewery in Tampa Florida, and a year before that they built a huge facility in the hometown Pottsville, PA.

A friend of mine was actually a tour guide at the brewery over his high school summers.

The Beer itself goes down easy, has a great aftertaste, but doesn't cost a fortune!

All around good beer.

I love Guiness too, My wife is Irish and she has 12 Bros and Sisters, a couple are best friends of mine

Holidays usually mean lots of Guiness

I love trying new brews, I'm a big micro-brew fan

Wow, thanks - that's great stuff.

I feel like the guy in that 'Office Depot' commercial that asks a question about an obscure topic and some expert comes of nowhere to answer it.
Gotta love the multi-dimensional versatility on these boards.

In Ottawa there is a little bar called vineyards that actually has a beer menu.

They have over 100 different brews with descriptions of each one.

I have been fortunate enough to have tried over 80 of them so far. If anyone ever gets the chance to go to Ottawa don't miss this place.

Yeah, Yuengling Lager is America's best kept beer secret.

American: Yuengling Lager (As many of you've said, a GREAT brew at a reasonable price)
Canadian: Molson Canadian followed closely by Blue (along w/ MV)
Imported/Foreign: Paulaner (my all-time favorite)

My favorite beer is free beer. If I had to choose though I would say Blue light definitly. Down here in Nashville all you can get is regular Blue. Every southerner I have gotten to try a Labatts is hooked on it. Every time I come to Buffalo I have plenty of orders to bring as much back as I can carry. Believe it or not most of them prefer Labatt Ice. They call it demon beer. Canadien Beer kicks ass.

While I agree with the free and cold options I'll thow my picks into the mix.

American - New Amsterdam (brewed at the Utica Club Brewery-my college town) followed closely by Yuengling Lager (I found it at a wedding in Pennsy a few years ago and got hooked)

Canadian - Labatt 50 or Labatt Blue (when did they drop the s from Labatt)

The only beer I wont drink is Bud. Hate it and it hates me.

No it's still UC. I got the Confusius quote from a 9/11 site and posted it around then. It seemed appropriate and makes me seem sophisticated. lol. I am also pretty well versed in Animal House.
Any Greek affiliations? None here, but I lived in a house with a bunch of AXP guys.
Construction on the new dorm started right after I graduated.

Utica is a great drinking town because that's all there is to do. People there take their drinking very seriously. I just moved away a little over a year ago. I still have a house there not far from UC.

Believe it or not, I'm a teatotaller. Having tried beer in high school (back when the drinking age was 18) and college, I honestly didn't like it at all. I don't drink wine either, but I did like that. I've never had enough at one time to get drunk.

March 12th, 2002, 9:46:39 AM
Forgot my other favorite that I buy in quantity when I have the chance, Bradoors!

My buddies used to go over the bridge all the time and get it at the duty free- with exchange and no deposit, it's cheeper than Budweiser here in Taxachussettes.

They would toss a case in the snowbanks behind the house and watch Hockey Night In Canada and sabres games. The Stuff woudn't freeze until about 10 degrees Farenheit because of the alcohol content- 7%! Talk about a cold beer! Three beers on an empty stomach and you got a good buzz.

Unfortunatly, Osama Bin Laden F#$%&ed it up for everyone. Border security isn't the joke it used to be and it is very difficult now to make those convenient beer runs to the duty free.

Those were the days.....

Yuengling isn't sold just in PA. We get it here in Md (we're close), but I'd bet they would have it at a larger beverage center near you.

Also, Yes the Yeungling brewery is the oldest in the US, but can you name the second oldest?

EricStratton
March 12th, 2002, 9:59:16 AM
FX Matt Brewery. Once names Utica Club Brewery.

Agreed drinking is a main activity in Utica. Suprising as good as the weather always is. I wasn't a greek, actually was an RA in South Hall for two years. Was good friends with a bunch of AXP, good bunch of guys.

If you heard of any stupid stuff done in the late eighties, the group I was with was probably involved.

BTW - a summer roommate worked at the brewery, I used to take the last tour of the day with him and hang in the pub with the staff. Nice place.

Hey Voltron, I'm a native Roman (RFA '92). I knew a few people from Whitesboro from back then. We (UC guys) used to do the same thing - I probably saw you at the brewery a bunch of times. We used to go a few times a week and since we knew tour guides, we'd often skip the tour and go straight up the the 1888.

When my roommate worked at the Brewery I got to know Nick Matt (now president) fairly well. His main question was why don't college kids drink Matts in Utica. He had people telling him all kinds of answers and I told the right answer. A case of 16oz bar bottles of Old Milwaukee at New Hartford Beverage Dist (a drive through) was $5.49 and Matts was $10 or $11 bucks. Like anything else in life, its all about the all mighty dollar.

Stratton,

Also, Matts Sucks, Utica Club rules

UC runs you 7.99 a case of cans, the rare breed of bottles are about three times the price

So basically if you consistently buy Utica Club bottles you are an idiot or really love bottles

Nate, I'm talking about 1989 pricing, not now.

I thought they stopped making Utica Club a few years ago.

Funny thing about that Brewery, they make so many contract beers that people think are made in local breweries. They used to make Sam Adams, Iron City, Brooklyn Lager, New Amsterdam, Portland Lager etc.
