For any of you thinking about going to see the new mel gibson/vietnam movie. don't do it. it sucks. the whole time mel gibson stands there with bullets flying by his head. he never gets worried once.

Braveheart was good, but how many times will they try to do the exact same thing over and over again with this clown? The Patriot was lame, and I'm sure this one is no better.

i disagree with you all.. ithought it was a solid flick.. not perfect, but well worth the price of admission.. sorry you dont all feel the same.. but to call mel a lousy actor is just absolutely absurd...

he stood there because that was the true story of a total bad ass that did exactly that.. i mean you have to add to it for dramatics obviously, but i just thought it made him look brave..
they did the same thing in black hawk down.. tom sizemore just chillin in the middle of a gun battle.. i dont think that makes it a bad movie.. but i respect your opinion.. everyone has one. =)
just find it hard to say lord of the rings ruled.. and we were soldiers was too fake.. lol

i thought it stunk too, bduff. it could have been a better movie if it was half as long. DRAGGED OUT movies have been a staple in the last 6 months!

Did you see Pearl Harbor? Same director. I hear he's gotta have that chick flick element to his movies. Blackhawk Down is supposed to have none of that.

It's that melodramatic, overly emotional, superficial love story part that makes a lot of people say, "Oh come on" Same guy did Braveheart by the way.

Black Hawk Down has no love story. It is very well made. It is only able to focus on 2 groups of ten soldiers (of the 120+ on the ground) but is very realistic. The book and the movie both oversimplify the fantastic job that the soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division did. They had to fight in thru the same forces that had the Task Force Ranger pinned then fight out. They were probably the only battalion well trained enough to do it in the army. Without them the most of the Rangers would have died. Army historians are finally starting to give them the credit they deserve. The end is kinda hokie too, with the rangers having to run 5 miles back to camp. The pakastani and malasian drivers did leave them but went back for them. It was flawed plan at higher levels but the Rangers on the ground did an excellent job playing the hand they were dealt.
As for Gibson standing up with bullets whizzing past his head, that is a staple of hollywood movies (see Apocalypse Now "The waves break both ways") but it is based in fact. In the civil war officers rode on horses alongside their men marching. They made for great targets and usually didn't last long, but their bravery inspired their troops to fight on. A combat leader can't hide like a bi*ch when the rounds start coming in, his confidence and coolness under fire (where did you think the expression came from) is noticed by his soldiers.

A large part of the movie was to point out the poor planning and blatant disregard that people like Westmorland had for the soldiers and their families.
