If we can, and if we decide that by the end of the season that JP is not that guy, we have to take a shot at Troy Smith.
This guy is absolutely amazing. I'm a bit biased cuz I'm the biggest Buckeye fan (BTW we just beat the school from up north haha), and this guy has it all.
He has pocket awareness
He has great poise and is always calm and cool (a must in the NFL)
He makes plays out of nothing
He is a leader
He has a great arm
He is accurate
He can run, but is a pocket passer
He is humble
He is willing to learn
He is has big time time/pressure experience
He has great mechanics
He is at his absolute best in the toughest of situations
He is competitive beyond belief
He has tremendous work ethic
He is just a good kid and always seems comes through
Think Vince Young intangibles (other than size) but smarter, more humble and a better passer.
He is going to be the BEST QB to come out of this draft class. There is nothing about him that doesn't say NFL pro bowler, except for his height, but I think he has all the intangibles you need to succeed in this league. Whoever gets him is going to be one happy team, just please don't let him go to Detroit.
Thoughts??
And if you don't like him or think this is a bad idea, please explain why instead of posting some stubborn ignorant post. Lets have a good discussion about this, cuz I honestly think this kid is the real deal.

as a fellwo buckeye fan I concur. But I have to say that my honest hjope is that jp shows us real progress over the next 6 weeks and it renders this point moot. buty 25-2 as a starter says something to me.
I've been and will always be a best player possible in the first round scenario kind of person. and that guy is calvin johnson, but he'll be gone as will joe thomas, gaines adams, etc.
a really itneresting prospect to me is zach miller te from asu, I think he could do wonders for the passing game and really help whoever the qb is to pick up first downs

We don't need another QB. did you see how good Losman played when he had time to throw it. We are in need of a line alot more then a QB.

even if we need another QB, we better draft a lineman. Not interested in another rookie QB project, dont care how good he is in college. I'll take an offensive lineman stud and Trent Green any day over Troy Smith and a crappy line.

I was excited about Losman's performance, but his breaking out parties always seem to accompany bombs to Evans, in this case twice, which accounted for more than half of his yards. I have never seen Losman control and win a game going over the middle or completing an out pattern. Not to mention that he did what he did against one of the worst passing defenses in the league.
He can't rely on bombs to Evans every game. I am still waiting to see how he plays without relying on the long ball, cuz it wont' be there all the time, and then what?
In conclusion, Troy Smith is the QB of the future for some team, I think it should be us, unless JP shows me he can really play in the next few games against some pretty good defenses.

I love Troy Smith, but I think us landing him is a pipedream.
We have MANY needs, and where we'll be picking (I'd guess anywhere between 8-15), there will be oppurtunities to take a player who fills one of those needs: OT, DT, CB. I just don't see us taking a QB in the 1st.
I thought we could possibly grab him in the 2nd round, but I think he'll move up. By draft day, he could very well be taken in the early 20s.
After watching that Michigan-Ohio game... what NFL GM (and more importantly, owner) didn't think this guy could be a successful NFL QB? Especially when you look at someone like Drew Brees, who's similar in stature.
Believe me, I'd like nothing more than to see him as our QB, but I just don't think it will happen.

I agree and if Calvin Johnson is available I think we should consider him carefully.

What is the point of big WR, without a QB to get him the ball??

He will be a top 3 pick, and I don't think we'll pick that high.

Well if JP flops the rest of the season and it's pretty clear he isn't the future, we WILL NEED a QB. So drafting one almost has to be an option, especially when you get a gem handed to you.
BTW, I think you'll see Troy Smith going in the top 10. I think he has done enough to show he is the real deal. Look for Oakland, Detroit, Tampa and even the Vikings to take him early on.

If JP continues to develop then this is a mute point. How do you know Calvin goes top 3? I said if he is available we should grab him. I am a 2 through 5 round kind of guy when it comes to lineman. Half of those 1st rounders on th eline cost a lot of money and then don't pan out (Williams, Patulski etc). I like to take skill people that high.

I could see that. I think his draft status could mirror that of Phil Rivers:
-Both smart, proven, winning college QBs, who own various records/awards (assuming Smith wins the Heisman).
-Both have questions about their physical tools (Smith's height, Rivers' mechanics).
At this time of the year before PR was drafted, we were talking about possibly grabbing him in the 2nd round. Then talk turned to REACHING for him with our 13th pick. Then he was taken 4th overall and the rest is history.
I think alot of teams will start to evaluate the QB position based on what has been shown on the field (wins, big games, leadership, smarts), and not so much on what the QBs physical stature is.

What you guys fail to realize is that Troy Smith has an incredible team around him. How often is he pressured? How often does he have a 300 pound defensive lineman coming straight at him unblocked? How many games in his entire career has he faced a team with more talent on the defensive side of the ball than the buckeyes have on the offensive side of the ball?
When your line is blocking, when your run game is clicking, when your receivers are getting separation, and when your defense stops other teams from scoring, you can easily be calm and collected. Qbs are no longer calm and collected when they can't trust their teammates around them to make plays. When the offensive line is letting defenders in to the qb unblocked and the qb looks around to find absolutely no one open, the qb can no longer be calm and collected.
This is the type of thing you see out of the OSU and USC qbs, because they have so much NFL talent on their team right now and their team is leagues more talented than the team they are playing against.
I am not sold on Troy Smith, and it is for the same reason I was not sold on Matt Leinart. I am not saying he can't have a successful NFL career, but I am saying that he is a lot more of a longshot to have a successful NFL career than you are making it seem.

Ignoring the Vikes game I see. He also passed for a lot of yards without many big plays (roscoe 50 yarder only big play I can remember) against the Jets (though he did have turnovers).

I don't care a whole lot who we take in the first round right now. As long as we get Brian Leonard (HB/FB, Rutgers) to replace Daimon Shelton in a later round, then Mike Hart next year, I'll be happy with where this offense is headed.

Football is a team sport, and I'm not saying that Troy Smith is god, but if there was anything close to one man being a team, Troy Smith has to be put up there with the likes of Vince Young.
Also, you have to take into consideration that while a player like Troy Smith has a great team around him, mostly of future NFL players, he also plays in a conference with loads of defenders that also go on to play in the NFL. The level of competition he faces is on par to the level of which his team is at, and the level of which he might see in the future in the NFL. So you need to look at it from both sides if you're going to use one side as a knock on him.
Also, I didn't discount the Vikings game, but did you also know that Minnesota's pass defense is worse than Houston's. Minnesota's is 7th worst in the league before Houston's 8th ranking.
We'll see what he does against Jax, SD and Balitmore. I'll be watching his play closing during those games.
C'mon guys, it's not draft time, the traffic for discussion in the war room is slim this time of year, and this is JP Losman related, lets move it back to hardcore talk please.

Let's take another WR. A small speedy one. Some pygmy that's only 3 feet tall and 70 lbs who runs the 40 in 2.9. :fumer:
