Ore is latest Tech player to say he'll return in '07

BLACKSBURG - With two regular-season games and a bowl to go in 2006, it might be premature to begin looking ahead to next season.

But as Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer pointed out Tuesday: If this relatively inexperienced bunch of Hokies can finish 10-2 and land an attractive bowl bid against a top BCS-conference school, it would go down as a great year.

And it could set up Tech's next run up the national polls in 2007. The Hokies, he figures, would have a high preseason ranking - the key to any championship chase - and a schedule strong enough to vault them toward the top of the BCS standings if they run the table.

That, of course, all depends on many variables, not the least being the return of key players who may be entertaining thoughts of early entry in the NFL draft.

To that end, Tech fans had to like what they heard Tuesday from tailback Branden Ore.

"I'm definitely going to be here," said Ore, a third-year sophomore out of Chesapeake's Indian River High and the ACC's leading rusher. "I'm definitely not going anywhere. "

While he could still change his mind, his strong words should quiet worried Hokies fans, especially considering similar statements from two of Tech's other top players in the past three weeks.

Duane Brown, a mobile and athletic 6-foot-5, 290-pound right tackle - he covers punts and used to be a standout tight end - said before the Clemson game that he plans to be back.

"Definitely," said the junior, "to try to help us go undefeated, win a national championship. You never know what other guys are planning on, to stay or go, but if this team stays together, if everyone's healthy, the sky's the limit for us."

Linebacker Vince Hall, a junior who leads the ACC in tackles, shares that vision. He said two weeks ago that neither he nor fellow star linebacker Xavier Adibi had given any thought to an early exit.

"We all came in together as 'The Future.' That's what we called ourselves," said Hall, a Western Branch graduate. "We're still doing it right now. I don't look past that. I don't even think about the NFL."

If he's thinking about his future as a Hokie, it could be bright. Should Ore, Brown, Hall and Adibi all return - as well as defensive end Chris Ellis, who might've entertained draft ideas before a somewhat disappointing season - Tech will return 16 starters next season.

That's eight each on offense and defense.

Such experience might just be enough to survive a schedule that includes road games against LSU, Georgia Tech and Clemson, as well as home showdowns with Miami, Boston College and Florida State.

"It's going to be an exciting year for us," Ore said.

A year in which Ore, Brown and Hall all say they can refine their skills for the next level. Ore said he needs to improve his pass-blocking and knowledge of defenses.

Those shortcomings, despite his 1,090 yards and 14 touchdowns this year, are reasons he said he won't even take a peek at his draft status following the season.

"I'm never going to put myself in a situation to fail," Ore said. "And if I was to enter the draft right now, that's what I would be doing. I really don't think I'm ready for the league right now. "

Hall and Adibi were prob going to be 2-4 round picks. I think they made the right choice though if they stick w/ it. Ore is also making the right call to.

I really like Hall though. Hes smart and is a gamer. Adibi is an athletic freak

Swan song at The Swamp

GAINESVILLE - Florida co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong usually doesn't have trouble locating Joe Cohen or Reggie Nelson.

"When you can't find Joe, you call Reggie," Strong said, "and if you can't find Reggie, you call Joe."

One is almost always with the other, so if you find one, the other is usually right beside him.

"That," said Strong, "is the kind of relationship they have."

It's been that way since Cohen and Nelson were small boys growing up in Palm Bay. They dreamed of one day playing together on the same college football field. Both went to Palm Bay High School and were stars when the Pirates won their most recent state championship in 2002.

Florida wanted both. Both signed with the Gators.

Cohen was a starter at fullback as a freshman, before moving to the defensive line the past three years. Nelson's road was a little different. Because of academic problems, he had to attend junior college in Kansas for two years, redshirting the first year so he'd have an extra year of eligibility at a Division I school.

He kept plugging away. Last year, Nelson and Cohen were reunited. This fall, both are starters on one of the nation's top defenses. Cohen had hip problems since his arrival at UF, and this is his first year completely pain-free. It has showed.

"I think Joe has really progressed," Strong said. "The thing about him, you come here as a fullback and all of a sudden you move to defensive line and he's getting better each game."

Nelson is an impact player at safety. He is one of 11 semifinalists for the Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive back. The three finalists will be announced next week.

"I saw him play in high school, but the way he's developed in college is the thing about him," Strong said. "He's a playmaker. He makes plays. The thing you like about him is he can erase the middle of the field for you."

The cousins have helped Florida advance to the SEC Championship Game for the first time since 2000, so they've already made their mark. But both want more and they have another dream -- playing in the NFL.

Could they be teammates one more time? It could happen, even as early as next year. Cohen's a senior, so he hopes to go to the NFL combine and impress teams enough for a shot after this season. Nelson's a junior, thanks to the juco redshirt. But he has played so well he may have little choice but to leave.

Nelson has been hounded so much by agents wanting to talk that he finally had to stop answering his cell phone.

"He says it's annoying," Cohen said. "They try to call him, and the thing he hates the most is numbers he doesn't know. Sometimes it can be a friend of his, and he just doesn't answer it because he doesn't want to talk to anybody about that situation that's about to come up. He stays away from that."

So time is winding down on both college careers, one way or another. When seniors are honored before Saturday's noon game against Western Carolina, it will be an emotional time for all of them.

"It's not too much of a sad thing," Nelson said of his last chance to play with Cohen at Florida Field. "He's going to another level where he can just keep playing."

But Nelson will miss his buddy when they part.

"We've been close since we were little," he said. "We just grew closer and closer. When I went out to Kansas, he helped me out a lot just being there."

More than most people probably realized.

Nelson told Cohen several times he was thinking of packing up and leaving Kansas, heading back to Palm Bay. But Cohen kept calling and checking on him and telling him to stay put.

"It's paid off," Nelson said.

While Nelson isn't making a big deal of Saturday, Cohen is a little more honest about his emotions.

"It's your last step, your last home game and you've got to move on. I won't say to bigger and better things because it doesn't get any better than this, but you've got to move on after this and keep on going," Cohen said.

Though it's been a banner year, Cohen admits he wishes some aspects of his career had been different.

"A lot of things helped me grow and mature and made me a better person," Cohen said. "But if I had been able to take a redshirt and get my hips right, little stuff like that . . . but for the most part I'm happy with everything -- the outcome.

"It's been great, man. Since this is my last year of playing football, it's been great having Reggie by my side. We push each other, lift each other up. Personally, I'm just glad to see him here. A lot of people doubted he'd ever make it here. He's doing some unbelievable things on and off the field, and I'm real proud of him."

Cohen isn't sure whether Nelson is playing his last game at Florida Field as a Gator. But there is a chance, with luck, they could still be on the same team again -- in the NFL.

"That's going to be a decision made by him, and I accept any decision he makes," Cohen said of Nelson's choice whether to leave school early or not. "He knows what needs to be done. Of course, his mom would love to see him graduate.

"He's not all into that (NFL draft projection) stuff. He doesn't really care. He's just a player who loves football. He doesn't worry about stock and all that kind of stuff."

Nelson's mother has been battling cancer for several years, and that will likely weigh heavily on his decision to leave. He's undoubtedly a first-day draft choice, whenever he goes.

As for his own future, Cohen feels he'll get a shot at the NFL.

"I see myself (eventually) coaching, but I'm going to try to push the NFL thing to the max and pray something comes up out of it, hopefully," he said. "We'll see."

Regardless of whether or not their paths cross in pro football, Strong is confident he'll always be able to reach one by calling the other.

"It's very obvious (how close they are) because during the whole recruiting process Reggie stayed with Joe," Strong said.

"They're just like brothers."

I think Nelson should stay

Hes a lock first dayer and wont last past the 2nd but I dont think he is a first rounder w/ Landry, Merriweather, and Griffen all ranked ahead of him

If he stays he will go into next year as the top S prospect and will be a 1st rounder.

Fresno State RB Dwayne Wright Enters The 2007 Draft

As he walked up the Bulldog Stadium ramp for the final time, Fresno State running back Dwayne Wright uncharacteristically reached out to shake hands and high-five as many fans as possible.

Receiver Joe Fernandez tried to delay his final walk to the Bulldogs' locker room, too, posing for pictures with fans and stopping to chat with others.

Like the rest of Fresno State's senior class, Wright and Fernandez did not want Saturday's feelings to end.

It had been more than a year since the Bulldogs could celebrate back-to-back wins and two seasons since Fresno State enjoyed a shutout.

Both happened Saturday in the Bulldogs' final home game of the season as Fresno State blanked Idaho 34-0 before an announced crowd of 35,282 that actually was closer to 25,000.

"We just wanted to enjoy this moment, because we know we'll never get to experience this again," Fernandez said. "Winning this game means a lot. It means the seniors went out on top at home. It means we're still the Bulldogs we were in the past."

Fresno State earned its first back-to-back victories since beating San Jose State then Boise State last season, and its first shutout since trampling Southern Methodist 42-0 in 2004.

And now the Bulldogs (3-7 overall, 3-3 Western Athletic Conference) are halfway through their last remaining goal of going undefeated in their final four games.

Fresno State plays at Louisiana Tech on Friday, followed by a trip to San Jose for the season finale.

The Bulldogs locked up Saturday's game behind their best defensive performance of the season — forcing nine punts, limiting Idaho to 11 first downs, registering four sacks and nabbing one interception, the first of defensive end Tyler Clutts' career.

"It felt good to play defense again like we know we can play," said linebacker Ahijah Lane, who made four tackles. "We're getting back to playing Bulldogs football. It feels real good to get a goose egg, though it's kind of discouraging at the same time to know we should have been playing like that all year."

Idaho, which was held to 199 total yards — including 14 in the second half — crossed midfield only three times and never went farther than Fresno State's 36.

"I thought we were terrible on offense," Idaho coach Dennis Erickson said. "We had no productivity with our running game or with passing. We couldn't do anything offensively."

Fresno State's running game was dominant, punching out 290 rushing yards behind an offensive line that had played together at their current positions for only one game.

Wright, who after the game said he will forgo a final season with the Bulldogs to enter the NFL draft, ran for 133yards on 19 carries while playing about three quarters.

On one of his runs, Wright broke loose for a season-long 51-yard scamper, running to his left, then shifting to his right to find a hole up the middle and breaking about four tackles along the way.

With his performance, Wright topped the 1,000-yard mark for the season — the second time in his career — and has 1,061 for the year.

Wright's touchdown came through the air when Tom Brandstater threw a dump-off pass that translated to an 18-yard second-quarter score.

Wright finished with a game-high five receptions for 26 yards.

"Today, I probably had the most fun running the ball," Wright said. "I was just playing with linebackers, making some moves and getting out to the open.

"It was a special day for me, an emotional day for a lot of us seniors."

Wright said playing with a lead the entire game made his job easier.

"When the defense is stopping the opposing team's offense, it just gives us more momentum," Wright said. "I'm going to miss playing here."

It wasn't just Wright who had his way on the ground. True freshmen Anthony Harding and Lonyae Miller both scored. Harding finished with 62 yards on five carries, with a long of 39 yards. Miller logged 56 yards on nine carries, with a long of 20 yards.

"It's nice to get back on the winning track," Fresno State coach Pat Hill said. "Where we are right now has taught us a lot as coaches, players, as a program. We'll be fine. The 'Dogs will be back.

"We'll get back to winning on a consistent basis. But mainly, I want us to get back to playing hard-nosed, aggressive football like we did tonight."

FSU OLB Lawrence Timmons will not enter

FSU's Timmons says he'll return for senior season

Lawrence Timmons is no doubt catching the attention of NFL scouts when he's making big plays as he did on Saturday, when he returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown. And they must take notice as he builds his impressive number of tackles for loss. He now has 18 this season.

But when the junior linebacker was asked on Sunday whether he was coming back for his senior season at Florida State, he replied: “Oh yeah, I'm coming back.”

Timmons said he has talked to people, including his linebackers coach, Kevin Steele, about the NFL. The team's second-leading tackler said the Seminoles defense has a bright future.

“We could be a top-10 defense in the nation, of course, next year,” Timmons said.

Erik Ainge Will Not Enter the 2007 NFL Draft

UT's Ainge talks about future with Meachem and Cutcliffe

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - All the success Tennessee's offense has had this season is causing some concern.

Keeping the same offensive unit together for next season could be a difficult task with speculation about whether quarterback Erik Ainge, receiver Robert Meachem and offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe will return.

Ainge says he and Cutcliffe will be back, but they might have to work hard to convince Meachem to not leave early for the NFL.

``I'll be here next year playing football with coach Cutcliffe. We'll both be here and (are) looking forward to doing great things here next year,'' Ainge said Monday during his weekly interview with reporters.

Cutcliffe was hired at the end of last season to replace Randy Sanders, who resigned during the 5-6 campaign. Cutcliffe was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee before he left in 1998 to be the head coach at Mississippi. He signed a contract with Tennessee for two years.

The No. 19 Volunteers (8-3, 4-3 Southeastern Conference), who finish the regular season Saturday hosting Kentucky, have revitalized an offense that ranked as one of the least productive last season.

Cutcliffe has said he might consider taking another head coaching job again but is focused on his current job now. His wife is from the Knoxville area, and their children are still in school.

``He's told me from the beginning he has no intentions to go anywhere else. I obviously know things happen. You know, several million dollars to coach a football team is tough not to (take). I understand that. He's not throwing his name out trying to find a job like that. It's one of those things he plans on being here and getting to work with us for a while yet,'' Ainge said.

Meachem is a different story. The junior receiver needs only 22 yards to set a new school record for receiving yards in a season, beating the 1,170 Marcus Nash had in 1997. Meachem has 1,149 yards and 10 touchdowns in 11 games.

Tennessee also will lose senior receivers Jayson Swain and Bret Smith. The trio were freshmen together in 2003, but Meachem had to redshirt because of a knee injury.

Ainge said he would like Meachem to return.

``I don't know how you wouldn't have thought about it. Obviously he's thought about it. I just saw today he could break the single-season receiving record and all that kind of stuff. He's had a great year. He's a great football player,'' Ainge said. ``I think if he were to stay then obviously that would help our team out tremendously, and I think that would help him out too. He's got a lot to think about the upside of both leaving and staying. I think it will take him a little bit to make that decision.''

Meachem has indicated he plans to talk to his family after Tennessee's bowl game before making a decision.

ESPN's draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Meachem as the fifth-best junior receiver behind Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson, Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez, and Southern Cal's Dwayne Jarrett.

Ainge said he was not sure if he would even turn his name in to the NFL for a draft evaluation on where he could be chosen.

``The way I look at it, Peyton and Eli (Manning) had as good if not better junior years than I had and they played in all the games and they all stayed. I don't think I'm where Peyton or Eli was right now,'' Ainge said. ``I have a lot of work to do with my game and at this university. I want to get a ring.''

Colt Brennan intends to stay

Next month, as a finalist for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, Hawai'i's Colt Brennan is going to Disney World.

Next year, Brennan expects to remain in Manoa.

"Those are my full intentions," said Brennan, a fourth-year junior who is eligible to apply for the National Football League draft.

Brennan said it would take an "extraordinary situation" to make him forgo his senior season.

But after the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, Brennan will seek an evaluation from NFL scouts.

"There are things you can do," Brennan said of finding his rating. "There are ways to go about it."

If he were to project as a first-round selection in April, Brennan said, "you'd have to consider (applying for the draft). That doesn't mean I'd go, but you'd have to consider it."

But Brennan insisted: "My full intentions are to come back. I have no problem with coming back next year. I would love it."

He said he does not know if he will take out an insurance policy as a safety net for a possible serious injury as a senior.

And while he would like to eventually pursue a career in pro football, the size of the contract is not the main factor in his decision whether to remain at UH.

"I want to have a big family when I grow up," Brennan said. "I want to have a lot of kids. I want to be able to support them. I want to be able to grow old in front of a big family. Money always helps with that. Money helps give people and family around you a lot of opportunities and stuff. So, yeah, it's a factor, like it is in anything, but it's not the driving factor. It's just one of the factors."

Brennan is clearly perceived as one of the nation's top quarterbacks, as evidenced by the O'Brien announcement.

Brennan, who leads the nation in total offense and passing efficiency, joins Notre Dame's Brady Quinn and Ohio State's Troy Smith as O'Brien finalists.

The winner will be announced on ESPN's Dec. 7 Home Depot College Football Awards Show on the Boardwalk at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Brennan and UH sports media relations director Lois Manin will attend the dinner.

"That's awesome," Brennan said, adding Quinn and Smith are "the two guys we heard about all year long. They definitely came in this year and played well. For me, to be put up next to those guys, that says it all. That's enough for me to be thankful and happy and appreciate the acknowledgement."

If I'm AG I would wait a little bit to see how many Junior WR's declare. Hes a 1st day pick right now and I actually like him better than Ginn. W/ a good senior year though he could make a nice run up the draft board next year but he'll have to do it w/ a new OSU QB so it could turn out to be a little risky

As expected B^squared is heading back to the Ville

Brohm says he will return as quarterback

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Their 48-17 victory over Connecticut on Saturday meant many things to the Louisville Cardinals.

The nation's sixth-ranked team clinched at least a share of the Big East title in its second season in the league.

The senior class has a 40-9 record with a bowl game still to play. U of L's 11 victories equals the most in school history.

And while the Cardinals waited to find out where they will play the bowl game, they learned that star quarterback Brian Brohm plans to return in 2007 for his senior season.

"I definitely expect to be back next year," said Brohm after passing for 341 yards and four touchdowns and running for a career-best 57 yards.

Cards Coach Bobby Petrino said, "I wasn't sure (that Brohm had announced his decision), but I'm happy about that."

Brohm's primary receiver, Harry Douglas, had five catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns, including a 67-yarder. He became the seventh player in U of L history to exceed 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He has 1,100.

While the Louisville offense was amassing 570 total yards, the defense was holding the Huskies to 236 yards, its second-best effort this fall. UConn rusher Donald Brown had 116 yards at halftime but gained only six yards on eight carries after that.

Concluding the regular season with an impressive victory, the Cards waited to learn more about their post-season prospects.

If Rutgers defeated West Virginia last night, the Scarlet Knights would share the league title with Louisville and receive the Big East's automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series. A Rutgers loss would give U of L the title outright and the BCS bid. That invitation could be to the Orange Bowl when the BCS schedule is announced tonight.

As they waited, the Cards rejoiced over their 11-1 season, their recovery from the second-half meltdown at Rutgers on Nov. 9 and the three-game winning streak they will take to a bowl game.

"We had some adversity to overcome," Brohm said, referring to star running back Michael Bush's loss for the season to an injury in the opening game against Kentucky. "The resilience of this team is what makes it so great. We were able to put whatever it is behind us and move on."

Petrino said, "It was a great season and the most enjoyable for me as a coach. The players came to work each day with a great attitude and great leadership."

The season was special for Douglas, a junior.

"It means a lot," he said. "It reminds me that hard work pays off. You can't slack off and be satisfied with what you do."

Senior cornerback William Gay said, "It was hard for me to hold it in before the game and during the game. It has been the best four years of my life, and I cherish every moment of it."

Trannon forgoes basketball to heal for NFL draft

EAST LANSING -- There won't be a second Senior Day introduction for Matt Trannon at the end of Michigan State's basketball season.

The four-year football wide receiver stopped the insanity that ruled his athletic life at Michigan State since 2003 by telling coach Tom Izzo Friday afternoon he doesn't intend to re-join the basketball Spartans for a fourth time.

Trannon will instead concentrate on getting healthy in preparation for the NFL draft in April.

"After going three years around the clock, I sort of understand it," Izzo said after practice. "I still think basketball would have helped him (for the NFL), I really do. But he's got a life and whatever he thinks, is what's most important to getting him where he wants to get."

If Trannon wasn't still recovering from hamstring, groin and ankle injuries sustained during the football season, the chances of him returning might have been better.

"I still think in his heart he wants to play, but in his mind . . ." Izzo said trailing off. "But I also respect and appreciate what he's given us over the couple years he's been with us."

Trannon was instrumental in the Spartans' run to the 2005 Final Four, and was honored with MSU seniors Maurice Ager and Paul Davis before the final home game of last season.

"It's not like we planned on (his return), like maybe other years," Izzo said. "I thought this would happen in the end. It's only disappointing because I think he would have brought a dimension to us.

"Plus, I liked having him around. For me, he had that toughness and competitiveness and sheer appreciation, so I liked having him around. I enjoyed his company."

Rebels' second-leading tackler to enter NFL draft

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi linebacker Rory Johnson will pass up his senior season and enter the NFL draft, coach Ed Orgeron said Monday.

Johnson played just one year for the Rebels, but managed to make a strong impression in his short time. He finished the season second on the team with 94 tackles despite seeing limited action at the start of the year.

Johnson got a late start after transferring to Ole Miss from Hinds Community College.

Jackson to return for senior year

LOS ANGELES - USC defensive end Lawrence Jackson told Trojans coach Pete Carroll on Thursday he would return for his senior season.
"I came back to be a part of a great program and great university. With the guys we have returning on defense I couldn't pass up being a part of it," Jackson said.

The decision was a mild surprise because Jackson was a preseason All-American and he will get his undergraduate degree next semester. But the redshirt junior recorded just four sacks this season and will likely improve his draft status by returning for another year.

"I have a chance to be a senior leader on one of the best teams in the country," Jackson said.

He currently has 42 tackles, four sacks and two blocked kicks. Late in the season, Carroll gave Jackson a copy of the book, "The Inner Game of Tennis," to get the defensive end to relax and stop trying too hard during games.

"It helped out because I was being critical and judgmental," Jackson said.

"I just gave in to those feelings. I would be disappointed in myself. It hindered me physically.

"After wins, I wouldn't be excited about the win, I would be disappointed with no sacks. Coach Carroll said that was a natural feeling."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jackson said Carroll was pleased to hear he was returning for next season. It's a rare victory for Carroll with underclassmen, following last year's departures of Reggie Bush, LenDale White, Fred Matua, Darnell Bing and Winston Justice.

The only underclassman to return last year was wide receiver Steve Smith.

All-American honors

Wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett was named to the Walter Camp All-American team, which means he is USC's first-ever 2-time All-American first-team wide receiver.

Smith was named to the CBS Sportsline All-American first team, which means it's the first time USC has had two wide receivers become All-Americans. Offensive tackle Sam Baker was also a first-team selection.

Jarrett was a Sports Illustrated first-team All-American while Smith, Baker and center Ryan Kalil were honorable mention selections.

Sam Baker, Washington, and Booty all going back

USC suffered a mass exodus of draft-eligible juniors after last season, but the Trojans probably will avoid a similar scenario in January.

All-American tackle Sam Baker and running back Chauncey Washington said Saturday that they would return for their final seasons of eligibility.

"I've always said the whole season I want to come back," Baker said after the Trojans' first workout since their upset loss to UCLA. "My dad always talks about just gathering as much information as you can and just trying to figure everything out, but I can't see anything really happening that would change my mind."

Neither can offensive line coach Pat Ruel, who said he has discussed the situation with Baker.

"He's got a chance to be an Outland Trophy guy, which is only going to increase his value," Ruel said.

Defensive end Lawrence Jackson already informed Coach Pete Carroll that he would return, and linebacker Keith Rivers said Friday that he requested an NFL evaluation but intended to play his final season.

All-American split end Dwayne Jarrett, regarded as the most likely draft-eligible junior to turn pro, reiterated Saturday that he would wait until after the Rose Bowl against Michigan to make his decision. Nose tackle Sedrick Ellis also is contemplating his options.

Washington said he sent paperwork to the NFL requesting an evaluation and draft prediction but was aware that he needed another year to prove his talent. Washington sat out the previous two seasons because of academic ineligibility and has been hampered by hamstring and knee problems throughout this season.

He said he was looking forward to playing well in the Rose Bowl and attracting attention that will make him prominent on NFL scouts' radar in 2007.

"I was hurt and playing on one leg for most of the season, so it's going to be crazy to see me play at 100% next year," said Washington, who has rushed for a team-best 736 yards and nine touchdowns.

Jackson, who had only four sacks this season, was relieved to have made his decision.

"At one point I was leaning the other way," he said. "I just finally made up my mind and I feel better about it."

Quarterback John David Booty also is draft-eligible, but the fourth-year junior said he has no intention of leaving.

"I'm coming back," he said. "There's too much ahead of us and still a lot to learn."

Stanley Doughty is going

Junior nose tackle Stanley Doughty is going pro -- and reserve red-shirt freshman quarterback Cade Thompson is just going.

University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier confirmed Saturday both players have left the program and won't take part in the Liberty Bowl against Houston on Dec. 29.

The 6-foot, 331-pound Doughty, who couldn't be reached for comment, has been in and out of the coaches' doghouse this year because of his weight and questionable work ethic.

He did start three games -- and 12 in his career -- and played in 10 of USC's 12 games, with 17 tackles. In 2005 he tied for the team lead with 3 sacks. He didn't have a sack this year.

"He's free to go. He's not here," Spurrier said. "He's going pro. We haven't seen him in a couple days. He's out. He's gone."

Doughty's decision came as no surprise, nor did Thompson's. Thompson came out of spring drills listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind incumbent starter Blake Mitchell. But Thompson played in only two games in a mop-up role, completing one of four passes for 1 yard...............

There’s a lot to love about him if you’re an NFL scout; there’s also a lot to worry about, i.e. his size (5-11, though he’s “listed” at 6-1). Each year we see NFL teams over emphasize “measurables” and there’s no reason to think Smith will be the exception to that rule. Texas Christian junior DE Tommy Blake, who had a couple of sacks in the Horned Frogs’ Poinsettia Bowl win over Northern Illinois as he and his mates shutdown NIU RB Garrett Wolfe the NCAA’s leading rusher, is indicating he will be returning to school for his senior season next fall. Meanwhile, Hawaii junior QB Colt Brennan won't be wasting any time after Sunday night's Hawaii Bowl to start considering his draft options. Brennan, who set a single-season record for TD passes this season, reportedly will be applying to the NFL draft advisory committee to get a read on his draft status first thing tomorrow morning. At the same time, San Jose State junior CB Dwight Lowery, a JC transfer who burst on the national scene this fall when he intercepted nine passes, reportedly will also be checking out his NFL options; the 6-0, 195-pound Lowery reportedly will consult with the NFL’s draft advisory committee and sounds very much like someone who would like to make the move to the NFL sooner rather than later.http://www.gbnreport.com/

Sweed has 11 touchdown catches this season, one shy of tying the school record held by Roy Williams. However, his production tailed off during the final month of the season. Sweed had only six catches for 89 yards and one touchdown in the final three games

FSU's Timmons will go pro

Florida State had hoped that standout linebacker Lawrence Timmons would wait one more year before heading off to the NFL. And for a while it appeared as though he was leaning to coming back to FSU for his senior season. However, on Friday he changed his mind according to FSU linebackers coach Kevin Steele.

"He called me this morning and told me he was going to the NFL," Steele said.

Last year, Florida State lost two juniors to the NFL draft, Ernie Sims and Antonio Cromartie. Both ended up being first round picks and there's a good chance Timmons could follow suit.

"You hate to lose juniors but then again you want what's best for the player," Steele said. "It's a team sport but you also want them to realize their individual goals."

Warchant.com also confirmed that Timmons has signed with pro agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Timmons finished second on the team with 79 tackles and led the team with 18 tackles for loss.

"They both felt that considering all the factors involved, the best decision was to enter the draft this year," Richt said. "In the final analysis, we always want what's best for each player, and in these two cases, both were confident this was the right decision."

Another junior, cornerback Paul Oliver, also is considering whether to enter the draft or return for his final college season. Richt said he would probably meet with Oliver later in the week.

During the regular season, Johnson led the team in sacks (7.5), tackles for loss (16.0), passes broken up (nine) and quarterback pressures (27).

In Georgia's 31-24 victory over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Johnson added two more sacks, three tackles behind the line, broke up a pass and forced a fumble.

Ware started as a freshman for the Bulldogs, rushing for 135 yards and three touchdowns in his college debut. But, slowed by injuries and plagued by fumbling problems, he was passed on the depth chart by Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin.

This season, Ware finished the regular season as Georgia's second-leading rusher with 75 carries for 302 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 184 yards.

Cal running back Lynch turning pro

BERKELEY, Calif. - Running back Marshawn Lynch said Tuesday he will skip his senior season at California to enter the NFL draft.

Lynch was the Pac-10's offensive player of the year after rushing for a conference-best 1,356 yards and 11 touchdowns, leading Cal (10-3) to a league co-championship and a victory over Texas A&M in last week's Holiday Bowl with 111 yards and two scores.

As a sophomore in 2005, Lynch became the fourth Cal tailback in four years to rush for 1,000 yards under coach Jeff Tedford. The Oakland, Calif., native rushed for 3,230 yards and 29 touchdowns in his three seasons at Cal.

"The opportunity to play in the NFL is something that I have always dreamed of," Lynch said. "Right now, it is just hitting me that my dreams are going to have the chance to come true."

Lynch is just the second Cal player to enter the draft early in Tedford's five seasons. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers also bypassed his senior season to enter the 2004 draft, going to the Green Bay Packers in the first round.

"Marshawn has had an outstanding career here and has been a key part of building this team into a nationally competitive program," Tedford said. "We are going to miss him, but support his decision. This has always been a goal and dream for him."

Justin Forsett, who has rushed for 1,625 yards as Lynch's backup over the last two seasons, is likely to replace Lynch next season in Cal's backfield

(12:30 AM):Vols WR to go pro… Tennessee junior WR Robert Meachem has reportedly his coaches, teammates and others at the school that he plans to declare for early entry into the NFL draft and will not return for his senior season. Meachem set the Vols’ single-season record with 1,298 receiving yards last season when he caught 71 passes, including 11 touchdowns. Meacham applied to the NFL draft advisory board for a projection of where he might go in the draft and reportedly received a grade ranging from late first round to early second round.

(12:01 AM): Big UM DT looks headed to draft… Michigan junior DT Alan Branch has not said publicly yet whether he will be entering the 2007 draft however speculation continues to grow that he will indeed be in this year’s draft class where he is expected to be a top 5-10 pick. The latest evidence reported is that Branch has not enrolled for this semester's classes which began this week. Undeerclassmen have until January 15th to formally apply to the NFL for early entry to this year’s draft.

Gator DE said to be close to going pro… Sources at Florida are reporting that junior DE Jarvis Moss may have played his last game with the national champion Gators. After Florida's 41-14 win over Ohio State in the BCS title game Monday night, Moss indicated he was leaning toward entering this year's NFL Draft. He was quoted in the Gainesville Sun saying “I've got a pretty good idea what I'm going to do. It's really attractive to move on." The 6-5, 255-pound Moss likely improved his stock after he harassed Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith. Moss recorded two sacks and forced a fumble in the Florida win. Moss, in fact, is one of several Gators leaning toward leaving a year early as FS Reggie Nelson, WR Andre Caldwell and LB Brandon Siler are all considering entering the draft with Caldwell also indicating that he may also be gone. Nelson and Silar, on the othe hand, have still to decide. Nelson, for example, who could be among the first 4-5 defensive players off the board has enrolled in classes for current semester.

Buckeyes receiver Gonzalez opts to enter draft

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Speedy wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, a deep threat and the second-leading receiver for Ohio State, will skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.

"Obviously, it's the toughest thing I've ever had to do in my life," the 6-foot, 195-pounder said at an emotional news conference in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

He had asked an NFL committee to assess his draft standing and was told he was a second-round pick.

Two other Buckeyes are contemplating jumping to the NFL a year early. Tailback Antonio Pittman will announce his decision Monday at his Akron high school. Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has not yet made up his mind, his father said Thursday.

Another junior on offense, tackle Kirk Barton, said last month that he will remain for his final season.

Befitting a philosophy major, Gonzalez said he carefully weighed the pros and cons for leaving early and for staying.

"Basically, the best-case scenario of leaving would be maybe you sneak into the first round. The worst-case scenario, maybe you fall down some draft boards. Am I OK with the worst-case scenario there? Yes, I guess I am," he said.

"The reality of the game of football is the worst-case scenario is I could show up the first day of spring ball and something terrible could happen and I may never be able to play this game and fulfill all the dreams that I wanted to."

An Academic All-American, Gonzalez was an All-Big Ten selection. He finished the season with 51 receptions for 734 yards and eight touchdowns.

Gonzalez said the 41-14 loss on Monday to Florida in the national championship game did not affect his decision. He also said it did not matter whether other teammates in his class were coming back.

"It came down to whether I felt I was ready and whether this was the right thing to do," said Gonzalez, who had two catches -- half of Ohio State's meager total -- for 11 yards in the game in Glendale, Ariz.

UA cornerback Cason will return for senior season

For Antoine Cason, the opportunity of a lifetime can wait.
Cason, Arizona’s all-conference cornerback, announced Thursday that he will return for his senior season rather than enter the NFL Draft. Cason filed paperwork with the league last month to gauge teams’ interest, but has decided to go no further.
Underclassmen must declare for the draft by Monday.
Cason is coming off the best season of his career. As a junior, the Los Angeles native registered 62 tackles and grabbed three inceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. Cason broke up seven passes, a team high.
Cason filed preliminary paperwork with NFL following the season to gauge his spot in April’s draft but otherwise did not comment on his status. He called the NFL “the opportunity of a lifetime” in November, but hinted in the same interview that the pros could wait until after his senior season.
UA coach Mike Stoops echoed that sentiment in the days following Arizona’s season. He said Cason could improve his earning potential - and climb into the first round - by staying for his senior year.
“With Antoine, as great as he is, I think he can always play better and position himself better,” Stoops said. “I want to position him so he’s a first-rounder or second-rounder.”
Not every UA player has taken the coach’s advice. Tailback Chris Henry decided last month to bypass his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. Henry was a backup for half of the 2006 season, but finished with strong showings against Washington State and Oregon. Henry said he was still upset with the coaching staff for benching him earlier in the season.
Cason’s decision comes a day after Rob Gronkowski, the nation’s No. 4 tight end recruit, verbally committed to Arizona over Ohio State, Clemson and Syracuse. Gronkowski is expected to be the centerpiece of Arizona’s 2007 recruiting

Abbate leaves Wake Forest after three years to go pro

Wake Forest junior linebacker Jon Abbate has signed with an agent and will enter the NFL draft.

Abbate, 5-foot-11, 245 pounds, led the Demon Deacons with 120 tackles, including six for loss and three sacks.

"I've wanted to reach this dream of playing in the NFL since I was a little kid," Abbate said Saturday. "The hardest part will not playing alongside my best friends."

Abbate is one of only three players in ACC history to lead his team in tackles for three straight seasons.

"I'm going to have to show my speed at the combine," Abbate said. "And I'm going to have to show that size doesn't matter. I'm 5-11, but I play like I'm 6-4."

Ohio State wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. will skip his senior year and take his talents to the NFL.

"I am excited to announce that I am making myself eligible for the National Football League draft," Ginn said in a statement.

"I thank Coach Tressel and all those involved within The Ohio State University football program for creating such a terrific environment for me to succeed both athletically and academically."

Ginn was part of a Buckeye team that went 12-1 in 2006 but lost 41-14 in the BCS championship game to Florida. Ginn returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown but injured his foot on the play and did not return to the game.

Ginn caught 59 passes for 781 yards and nine TDs in 2006.
