View Full Version : The Official Vote For Rory Campaign Thread
MLH
November 19th, 2006, 5:51:48 PM
There is a movement amongst NHL fans across the globe to write in former Sabre great and future HOFer Rory Fitzpatrick into the 2006-2007 NHL All Star Game. His fluid stride, laser shot, and keen awareness deserves to be recognized on a national scale. There are already hundreds of hockey fans jumping on board and attempting to fix the injustice of Rory being left off the ballot. VFR campaign staff estimates that 200,000 votes will be sufficient. Thousands are already in. Do you part to make history! Write in Rory!

Fitzpatrick gains ground in All-Star voting
By JOHN VOGL
News Sports Reporter
12/8/2006
SUNRISE, Fla. - The Buffalo Sabres are a lock to have several players in next month's All-Star Game. The movement to have one of their former teammates join them is moving faster than a bullet train.
Rory Fitzpatrick, who joined Vancouver this season after four sometimes-forgettable years in Buffalo, is fifth among defensemen in Western Conference voting. He was the conference's leading vote-getter in the latest polling period with 113,509, all because of a Sabres fan who started VoteForRory.com.
Fitzpatrick, from Rochester has been caught off-guard by the votes and the ensuing media attention.
"If anybody knows me, they know I don't like to be the focal point of anything," Fitzpatrick told reporters Thursday in Vancouver. "I'd rather just do my business and go home. I'm going to have fun with it. Everybody seems to be enjoying it."
The man who started the Web site, Steve Schmid, said he did so because players like Fitzpatrick deserve to be honored for their determination to stay in the league. Even the Canucks are jumping aboard, with goaltender Roberto Luongo saying he voted for Fitzpatrick five times.
Fitzpatrick, who has no points in 16 games and is a minus-2, has ground to make up in order to go to Dallas for the exhibition. The top two defensemen go, and second-place Niklas Lidstrom of Detroit has 317,373 votes compared to Fitzpatrick's 144,819.
"I'm not making any plans to go to Dallas," said Fitzpatrick, who hasn't decided if he would go should he be voted in. "If it happens, then that's a whole other fence to climb at that point."

Supposed fans of the NHL aren't really doing the league any good in trying to make the All-Star game into a joke. Rory Fitzpatrick has no business being there; if I was in the league office, I sure as hell wouldn't be laughing at this. I'd just ignore the votes.

It sincerely pisses me off for a number of reasons:
#1: I think he sucks in comparison to 60% of the defensemen in the NHL. Yeah he's a hard worker, but he is by no means an all star. That's what this is, an ALL STAR GAME. The best of the best will play. If you vote in an average hard working mediocre player, what the hell is the point in that? To prove something? That the fans want to see him play there? Hell if I want to see him play there. The kid is gonna get worked by any line he's up against. ESPECIALLY if he starts.
#2. It is making a mockery of the NHL all star game.
#3. It further shows how unpopular the NHL is right now. This kind of thing could never happen with MLB or NBA.
#4. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Rory himself is not excited about this. You can tell in the interviews. "I'm not sure what to think about all of this." He's not an idiot. He knows a lot of people are doing this as a joke and are mocking him as a player.

I'm almost motivated enough to start StopVotingForRory.com.
its not that big a deal man, no way in hell Rory will play in the game. He wouldn't dare do that.

I feel bad for Fitzpatrick. He's not the best player in the league....not even close. But he doesn't deserve to be treated like a joke..... its gotta be embarassing,
How freaking funny would it be if he had an incentive laden contract that included an escalator for the all-star game like they have in the NFL.

A lot of the players nominated for the all star game don't seem to belong on the team though, is it just me?

I'm not bitter at all, I just think the all star game like the pro bowl has become more of a popularity contest than anything.

I'm not bitter.... i just feel bad that someone took it upon themselves to embarass a guy that seems to be a pretty decent person who is just not the best hockey player around.

Fitzpatrick, a journeyman defenceman with the Vancouver Canucks, is second in voting among Western Conference blue-liners in results released Wednesday by the league. Fitzpatrick has 428,832 votes, trailing only Anaheim Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer (447,502).
Should Fitzpatrick remain in the top two by the time voting ends Jan. 2, he will earn a spot in the all-star game as a write-in candidate with just nine goals and 18 assists in 229 career NHL games.
U guys made it happen. He deserves it for the way he played for the sabres. LETS GO RORY! KEEP ON VOTING MAKE HIM #1!!

All of you who are bitter about it are losers.I know, really. Who the hell cares?! It's an exhibition game that doesn't matter, a footnote in a player's stats.
And it's the Western Conference. It's not like he's taking a spot away from a Sabre.

RORY-MANIA
Potential all-star Rory Fitzpatrick will lead the Vancouver Canucks into Columbus on Friday night for a date with the Blue Jackets.
The 31-year-old Fitzpatrick has suddenly become a cult figure in NHL circles because of his immense popularity in the Internet community. What began as a joke, the idea of voting Fitzpatrick onto the 2007 NHL All-Star Game's starting lineup for the Western Conference, has now become a decent bet to occur. Fans voting in cyberspace have jumped on the Fitzpatrick bandwagon, as the Canucks rearguard now trails only Anaheim Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer among Western Conference defensemen.
Fitzpatrick clearly isn't getting votes based on merit on the ice, since he's yet to record a point this season in 20 contests. He also totals 18 penalty minutes, 17 shots on goal and a minus-1 rating for Vancouver this season.
That said, Fitzpatrick is being talked about throughout hockey circles--and even outside the hockey community. A second-round draft pick by Montreal in 1993 (No. 47 overall), Fitzpatrick has toiled for six NHL clubs (Montreal, St. Louis, Nashville, Edmonton, Buffalo and Vancouver) in 12 professional campaigns. Obviously, hockey fans everywhere can relate to journeymen such as Fitzpatrick, which is a major reason why the 'vote Rory to the All-Star Game' campaign has taken on a life of its own.
On Friday, Fitzpatrick and the rest of the Canucks will try to halt a two-game losing streak in the third of four straight games on the road--which came on the heels of a three-game winning streak. As for Columbus, they're coming off a split in their home-and-home series with Detroit.

While many are jumping on the "Vote for Rory" bandwagon in an attempt to get Canucks blueliner Rory Fitzpatrick voted into the All-Star game, don't expect Wayne Gretzky to cast his ballot any time soon.
The Phoenix Coyotes coach and former NHL great said Thursday he thinks the NHL should intervene in the "Vote for Rory" phenomenon to make sure the players who most deserve to play in next month's All-Star Game in Dallas are included.
Fitzpatrick, a write-in candidate, is in second place among Western Conference defencemen in fan balloting thanks in gigantic part to a fan-started Internet site - www.VoteForRory.com - that is asking people to cast an All-Star vote for Fitzpatrick.

Yo Great-One, go poop in your hat. Rory is what the ASG needs, a friggin' wake-up-call. Besides, you wont be coaching the west anyways.
BTW, now Wayne will know who to bet on....

A game played purely to showcase top talent doesn't need a wake up call in the form of Rory Fitzpatrick.
Kudos to Wayne for saying what everyone else was thinking.

Way to contradict yourself. Top talent should be defined by stats and/or coaches selections, not a popularity contest. Some of these guys get in on name only ala NFL Pro Bowl crap. It's nice to see the fans serve up a dish of "Eat it" after all. Up yours Wayne.

Update: with 1 week left until the close of the polls, Rory has fallen to 3rd place, about 35-40 thousand behind Lidstrom, and about 55-60 thousand behind Niedermayer.

Fitzpatrick says All-Star saga got personal
http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20070120/1037850.asp?tbd1037850.asp
Rory Fitzpatrick never convened a news conference at his locker. He never solicited support for an oddball cause.
He certainly never asked to be the butt of someone's international joke.
The Vancouver Canucks defenseman found himself in the middle of a controversial storyline that drew the ire of many. An Internet campaign to vote Fitzpatrick into the All-Star game nearly worked, and when it looked like he might be elected a Western Conference starter, some loud hockey voices thundered.
"They weren't informed on it," the ex-Sabre said Friday before facing his old team in HSBC Arena. "They didn't know the whole story, I guess. If they did, then I don't think they could have delivered criticism at me.
"You can say I don't deserve to be in the All-Star game. That's fine. I don't even take that as an insult. It's just a fact. But when you come out and make it personal, that can hurt."
Fitzpatrick was ragged on in Buffalo because he couldn't find a loose puck between his feet on a play that helped the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Sabres in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference finals. The Irondequoit native signed with the Canucks over the summer.
The crusade to get Fitzpatrick written into the All-Star game started as a lark but exploded once computer-savvy fans realized they were having an impact on the balloting. The push to get him in became a feel-good story across North America - even though Fitzpatrick had a broken ankle.
Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky weren't amused.
"The big thing, Rory, if you're watching, they're not laughing with you, they're laughing at you," Cherry said on a "Hockey Night in Canada" telecast.
Said Gretzky: "I think from his point of view, it's great. From what the All-Star Game is about, it's 100 percent wrong."
Fitzpatrick said he likely would have turned down a spot on the roster had he garnered enough votes because he "didn't want to be a sideshow." He finished third behind Scott Niedermayer and Nicklas Lidstrom.
"I think I probably would have not gone," Fitzpatrick said. "It started to get quite negative for some people in Canada."
