1) You must know something, they don't let just anyone into NOVA. You just picked the wrong major because you obviously went in without a plan. That plan, if you want it, is to play to your strengths.

2) You studied a long time and he didn't test over the material in lecture or in the book? Dude I hate when that happens, but shit happens and you gotta shrug it off

3) How are you a dead man, if you are thinking about suicide because you will have failed college and disgraced your family name and wasted your family's money don't. Shit happens, and you gotta learn to overcome. Chances are they will still tolerate and even love you.

4) Dude, try getting into the military (you have mentioned how it makes you a real man) If your parents don't want you, then you can redeem yourself by service to the nation.

5) If, or if not, the military then try getting in a junior or community college and play to your strengths.

6) You know what its turkey day this week and really you can do one of two things for the remainder of the semester. Go to all the frat parties you can and get wasted and pick up some girl with ultra low self esteem and pork her. Just go out and have fun and party like there is no tommorow, for in your case this might be true and just go all out and have fun. In your classes the final week of the semester go into class and tell your profs, in front of your peers, what you think about your profs and their mothers. Or you can bear down and spend all thanksgiving weekend with your nose in a book and study like you never had and even if you don't get the grades you wanted you can leave Nova in December with the knowledge that you gave it your all.

7) Perhaps if you spent less time on the Range and more time studying you wouldn't have these academic issues

8) If you don't want our advice, as its obvious you haven't followed anyone's- least of all mine- advice then why do you post your sob stories?

9) If you are a hoax then :upyours:

Another nugget of sound advice that I posted in your midterm grade thread.

Why the **** didn't you drop Business calc. I mean you are terrible at even basic math especially when you consider the fact that if you are taking 5 three hour classes for 15 hours you really have a 1.8 Also who the **** advised you to take English, a foreign language, and two very difficult math classes in that transitory 1st semester? You really should have dropped business calc because although you wouldn't have had grades anywhere near mine you could have had a respectable 2.25. I'm not trying to make you feel better but lets face it you really should have considered dropping a class that you had no business taking in the first place.

More food for thought from your I flunked out of NOVA thread

"Dude the problem is not with NOVA, the problem lies with you. You obviously lack discipline and the mental fortitude required to work hard and seek advice. I gave you you advice, and so did NJSue, Pete, and others. I don't know why I bother since you won't listen to this either, but here is what you do.

1. Decide right now if you ever want to go back to college. If Yes, you really need to get your shit together and work as fast and furious as you can because if you don't you'll have to go to a JR. College or Community college to repair your credentials

2. The Service could do you some good. If I were you I would choose the Army or Marines because you need some badass drill instructor to slam some sense into you.

3. After Joining the service I would get some community college credits and try going to college again. Also if I were you I would ask myself what I am good at before going head first into a concrete wall of things that you suck at. Why did you not take Polisci or philosophy classes? Are you good at math? If not, then why did you take so many math related courses your first semester."

Even more sound words from the same thread as mentioned in the above.

"Also NWF, if you believe that you flunked out then it is already too late for you. There are three things that I learned in my undergrad experience. You are only as good as you give yourself credit for. If you aren't willing to deliver the maximum effort and have tenacity to take something by the horns than you are doomed. Ultimately your disgraceful performance in college rests solely on your shoulders. Like everything else in college and in life you only get out what you put in."

more words of wisdom from the same thread as the last two.

"Dude, you are either lying or incredibly stupid. Now that that is out of the way it is time for me to quiz you.

1. Has Math ever been your strong suit? If not why the hell are you taking three math classes in a single semester?

2. Well Duh, of course they teach 3-4 times as much info in college than they did in high school. They use it to seperate the men from the boys.

3. Those study sheets, well they have them in college. They are called notes. You write down everything the prof. says in class in a blank notepad and then you ask questions on the parts of the stuff you haven't been able to grasp. Have you been going to all your classes because that could help. Sorry but unless you are willing to take copious amounts of notes then I am afraid there are no handouts. However, if you take notes and read the text then you will have more understanding.

4. Textbooks, okay dude I deduce from what you have been saying that you are not taking notes in class. Textbooks, be they in math, english, humanities, science, etc are generally supplemental to the info provided in class. However you may also want to try going into a couple of 1 credit note taking and reading comp classes.

I wish you well, but if aren't willing to give the maximum effort -some classes don't require five hours, I think in my most difficult classes I studied 2-3 hours a day- then you are not cut out for college. NWF please do not give up."

From your can someone help me with my math homework thread: http://buffalorange.com/showthread.php?t=96822 there was this bit of advice.

"Its time to go off now. Mods I appologize for any personal attacks that you might see. NWF you don't have money for a tutor? Dude have you ever heard of study groups? Good way to meet people and you learn. If you need help most schools departments generally have free tutoring. Also go see your professor if you haven't a clue of what to do. If you cannot be proactive enough to find those resources, and yes they exist and are generally cost free, that can help you then you obviously don't belong in college. My advice in that case would be tuck your tail between your legs and go down to a recruiting office so that you can go somewhere where a wise DI can knock some sense into you."

Gibby
November 17th, 2006, 10:46:05 PM
1. Get a tutor
2. See if there are study groups, and if so join them
3. talk to your prof and see if he can help you
4. If you are still doing bad in that class in a few weeks then drop it so it won't adversely affect your gpa.
5. Ask yourself why do you need this class
6. See if you can switch majors
7. If you are naturally bad at that class, then go home and take something during the summer at junior college and transfer it to your school.

Did you even pay attention to this advice? "Have you considered taking photos, secretly of course, and reporting him to the police? Or is he a Philly native. Hey NWF is there some kinda MAD policy you can get on him- That is to say he plays music loud that you hate, do you have anything you could play equally as loud that he would hate? You might have to dig deeply on this one. I went through German folk, bagpipes, Classical, Jazz, and Blues before I stumbled onto a deadly mix of Petra (for the unprotected ear that hates christian hair bands, please avoid) and Russian military music. Shut the bastard up. He comes in at three in the morning, wakes you up, and then himself can't get up in the morning? Best solution is to buy the most obnoxious alarm clock you can find and just let it keep buzzing. If he bitches about it say nothing and go to the RA and demand mediation. The RA has to get involved then. The Roommate gets a write up and with your photographic evidence of illegal activity in hand also in notion you will have a good situation.

BTW, these are all combat tested methods that I employed my first semester in college when truly I had the roommate from Hell. In contrast to my roommate first year at CMSU who wasn't that bad. However, the best and least dangerous advice I can give you NWF is ASAP, meaning the very first time housing changes are offered, seize the opportunity to either

1)get yourself a private room.
2) or if you can't secure enough finaid to secure a private room then try your luck in demanding a room change.
3) or iff you can move off campus, at first a bit more expensive, your freshman year then get an apartment close to campus if not, then demand a change.
4) Last resort is to bring your mental problem to bear and say you are being discriminated against. This has a huge opportunity to backfire, so be very careful and only save this as your very last card. Please consult me or someone you know and trust before even thinking of this one as it is a nuclear option

As for people never wanting to see you, well that sucks dude and all I can say is seek out like minded folks by speaking a lot less than you listen. The girls that come in for him are there for drugs and not because they like him. Don't be jealous of somebody who is less than you. My whole question on this is Why TF are you jealous of this bastard? Hating him I could see, but jealous?" http://buffalorange.com/showthread.php?t=95511

The following advice, that you did not take, was given to you in your first days of college. You should have paid attention when I wrote:

You're not fitting in. Okay bubba when you spend your days jacking off in your room (or as you call it "playing your guitar") you can't get out there and hang out. Second don't talk about your desire to masturbate -the ladies don't wanna hear it and the guys will be queezy around you. Third, **** your professors. If they hate you no sweat off your back. Most professors don't care one way or another about Froshy students, and if you make good contributions in class and show potential in your papers and on your exams they will start to appreciate or at least value your opinion. BTW, no offense to any PhD profs on the range as this is just personal experience, those snobbish profs are called Doctors. They have their PhD and they feel that this gives them Godlike authority. Others aren't really a problem but if you show dedication and make good contributions then they will respect you. That and if you had a good HS interraction with your teachers, keep in mind that in college profs don't generally like to hang around students and give special attention to those who need help. They expect you to generally swim or sink. They will give you advice sure enough, but you have to be on the ball yourself. BTW, what is your major? Have you considered waiting on picking one or maybe switching it? From your posts I think Polisci would be a good fit for you.

If saying stupid things is your problem, then say very little and listen to people. Find out- this usually comes through listening and not speaking- who shares your viewpoints. Join clubs with like minded individuals. If your guitar playing isn't a masturbation metaphor then go to the university union or campus green -or whatever NOVA's equivilants are and strike up a tune. Or find others who play the guitar and join them. NWF, are you a religious person? Surely NOVA has things like Baptist Student Union, Wesley House (Methodist), Catholic Student Center, Xi Alpha (Assembly of God), Lutheran Student Center and what have you. Do you like singing or playing guitar and are you good at it? Consider joining a choir club, either religious or secular. I joined Associates of Black Collegians Gospel Choir (I am neither Black nor a great singer) but I did meet my fiance and lots of cool people there. Also don't let campus be the only thing you do in Philly. Find a local church, if you are religious. If not get involved in community centers. Read the Philly papers and see what community service events go on. NWF college is what you make of it. You have to be proactive as people just don't decide that they want to be your friend, most just don't care either way, but if you work at it I'm sure you can make some. Do not give up. Stay there at least a semester or a year. If you still hate it, then transfer to something closer to home if it makes you feel better.http://buffalorange.com/showthread.php?t=95375

Even more advice that you did not take.
1. If pals from high school are going with you to college do not room with them because you will learn that they have quirks that you did not know about and it could damage an old friendship.

2) Roommates are *******s, at least my first one was. See the university is evil in that it will usually pair you with the worst possible choice for a roommate. Do not let this happen. Make sure you have enough money to purchase your own room as soon as room changes come up. If you have made new friends by this time see if you can room up together.

3) You will always want to have quarters. Now I was told this before I began and it made no sense, well if you want clean clothes and that soda rush before class this will be very benificial. Quarters are the official currency of the university system.

4) If at all possible avoid 8:00 am classes. These classes are the pits and if your roommate or dorm neighbors are *******s you will be too tired to give the class your all. I'd suggest starting at 11

5) Sit in the first row or two of the class room, take notes, bring a tape recorder if you are allowed, and ask questions. Hob knob with your professor in his office hours and talk to him or her about anything you don't understand. This actually works

6) Do not go in there with a set in stone study program where you know what your major and minor are. These WILL change at least once.

7) Get to know your financial aid officers and read up on available scholarships

8) Get involved in campus activities. A good number would be about 4-5.

9) Religious? Get involved in the ministry of your choice.

10) Do not get a credit card. You are too ****ing stupid (I mean this about all 18 year olds heading off to college and even me at that age) to handle free money. Trust me there will always be expenses you did not plan for and after eating that "wonderful" bile that they call dining hall food you will want to spend your money on pizza, fast food, etc. Get a debit card and an account in your own name that you or your parents can put money in. That way you aren't in debt hell wondering how the **** fried chicken and pizza put you in 500 dollars over your head

11) The Bookstore is a purely for profit entity. Half.com is much better. If you are lucky as I was you can check most supplemental books especially in english classes and most history classes from the library. Also try inter library loans you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars for doing this. Also often you won't need a current edition of a book in the humanities and liberal arts courses.

12) Get a job on campus. Good for work experience, and it will cut down on what you have to pay back in loans later.

13) Have fun, but don't slack in your studies

14) If you can have any say in it don't take over 15 hours a semester.

15) College is loaded with beautiful women (handsome men for the ladies out there) but until you have enough of an entertainment budget to go on dates stay back. Also don't throw away your college career because you majored in pursuing a significant other

16) Get plenty of sleep, not in class, and make sure you also have some study time unless you are a champion procrastinator like me who was able to get away with very little studying

17) If you need anything from the campus clinic, go to the local hospital. you will be better off because your campus clinic is usually staffed by incompetent imbiciles. I went to two universities in my undergrad and I can tell you both were staffed by nitwits.

18) Do not let the sticker shock get to you when you see how much your classes cost.

19) If you must drink, party, and go clubbin, reserve this for friday and saturday nights. You still get to have fun and you aren't fried when you go to your classes

20) If you are a porn addict, please get a computer in your own place so that I don't have to look at you beating off in the library. No, not on NWF but it is based on shit I saw at CMSU's library.

21) Walmart is your neccessary evil. You will go to them for everything even if you vowed you would never go to them

22) Taco Bell is fine cuisine. Try the dorm food and you will know what I'm talking about

23) If you don't care about learning and party more than you go to class, etc then maybe you should just come home

24) Never hesitate to transfer to another university. I did and was much happier closer to home than I was at Bama

25) Shut up, and listen to new ideas.

This advice was given on your waco/ Ruby Ridge thread. Oh and NWF how did you get out of sophomore (HS) English in high school without knowing that one does not use "you" in an academic paper? How is it possible to have so many gramatical errors in an academic paper? NWF, while it is okay to write freestyle and from the heart on things like the Buffalo Range you need to follow the guidelines of MLA for English class. When citing sources, even if it is wikipedia, it is not sufficient to just say wikipedia. Also much of your paper lacks citation at all. Another thing, NWF, is that your thesis statement is not clear and your paper does not really go along with your thesis statement as you mention folks like the Weavers and the Branch Dividians who were seen as nutjobs. NWF, how did you get into college without knowing how to write? I mean its one thing to have posts full of errurs on da range but in academic settings one needs to ensure that they have a high quality topic.

Consider this for future reference.

Oh and from the same thread, take heed of this as well. I'm not saying you didn't but did you use in text citation or footnotes/endnotes? No, did you use credible sources? No. Dude get yourself into a writing centre.

What do you want me to do?

I have gone to study sessions

I have studied hard..

I just can't do this shit..

Your a better man than me Phantom.. College just isn't for me..I always was a good student in high school, because my teachers taught us more.. They tried harder... We got actual study guides, and they would review everything on the study guide..

We don't get these in college.. Sure, everyone will think that I screwed up, and I could have tried harder but look at it this way..

My roomate has missed 3/4 of his spanish class, Math class, and has handed his term paper for philosophy in 5 days late TWICE

HE IS PASSING ALL OF HIS CLASSES??

Why?

he is taking beginners spanish, contemporary math ,philosophy, english, and sociology..

All easy classes..

yet he is doing his job? The kid gets drunk and stoned every night, and doesn't come to class..

Give him credit...

If I lived a week like he did my life would probably be over....

Im not a lucky guy.. If I was him(hes fat) I wouldn't even talk to a girl before I lost some weight... Hes having sex with them..

Man, I don't want to sound like an *******. But Fifo, Lifo stuff is easy shit. I actually had a test on it Friday myself. Your trying too hard, don't cram. I do better not studying at all then when I cram. If you can't handle accounting, business isn't for you. Don't take this as a negative, there are lot's of other things you can do in life. Does your school offer free tutors? Take them if possible, 1 on 1 is a much better study method.

Some people like your roomate just get by. Yea he's passing, but he is also wasting a damn good life by not caring about his education. I have a good friend who sounds just like him. He didn't give a damn about school, but he would still get decent grades. Just keep trying, study every day for a short time, 10 minutes or so a subject. Thats only about 50 minutes a day. Spread it out too. Study math and accounting, go eat dinner and then come back and study something else.
