View Full Version : religious right a bunch of crybabies

From the country's heartland, voters sent messages that altered America's culture wars and dismayed the religious right - defending abortion rights in South Dakota, endorsing stem cell research in Missouri, and, in a national first, rejecting a same-sex marriage ban in Arizona.
Conservative leaders were jolted by the setbacks and looked for an explanation Wednesday. Gay-rights and abortion-rights activists celebrated.
The verdict on abortion rights was particularly clear. Oregon and California voters defeated measures that would have required parents to be notified before a girl under 18 could get an abortion, and South Dakotans - by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent - rejected a new state law that would have banned all abortions except to save a pregnant woman's life.

I don't think that it is an issue w/religious freaks.
If my daughter (God forbid) ever became pregnant before she was 18, and wanted to have an abortion - I as her mother should be notified. I am her parent and I am responsible for her until she is 18. Her decisions, are my decisions until she is an adult.
If the school is going to notify me if my child cuts class then why shouldn't I be notified if my child is seeking to have an abortion?

The school is a public institution. They're compelled to give you information about your (minor) daughter.
If your daughter chooses to go to a private doctor on her own, that's her private business. Obviously you don't have 'control' over her, otherwise why would you need to have the state compel her doctor to share her private mediacal information ?

Because there should be parent consent. A minor does not have rights yet. They can't vote, they can't drive (until they are 16), they can't buy alcohol, but yet they can go seek medical attention without a parental consent?? Makes so much sense......

Well... in our society minors are not allowed to enter into contracts without the consent of a legal guardian. I fail to see where the contract to perform medical procedures, no matter what the procedure, should be any different.
I realize what I just wrote is probably not set in stone. Like most things, we fudge the details all over the damn place, which just makes for endless invective. But if we could be consistant for a change... oh well. :P

God forbid if she was raped and got pregnant but because of the law that states you would have to know if she got an abortion you forbid her to get one but the shame of carrying a rape child was to much to bare on her teenage mind that she ended up killing herself and the baby.

What if the child has reactions to different types of medications that are being used and the minor does not notify the doctor accordingly and something terrible goes wrong with the procedure? Then what?

Uhh, cool. Well, this thread is pretty awesome, I guess. I love ad hominem attacks. But I wouldn't mind getting back to the point of the thread, which it looks like was the discussion of parental notification on abortions.
Can't believe nobody's touched this one yet...
Because advocates of the state want the state to make your parental decisions. You see you are too much of a dim witted boob to raise your children. There are experts at the Dept. of Health and Human Handouts to do it for you.
Pete, you're a smart guy, and I'm glad you're against the idea of the state inserting itself into the nuclear family. Which, of course, is exactly why you should have been against this ballot initiative. Why your posts seem to support it is beyond me, as the dialogue is contrary to this (perfectly valid) philosophical notion you've expressed that the government should absolve itself of the affairs of the nuclear family.
Without the initiative passing, the status quo is preserved, which, to the best of my knowledge, does not involve "advocates of the state making your parental decisions", or at least not unnecessary decisions. But in a world where this bill is passed, there is necessarily more governmental interference, as the state would enforce a positive requirement on the parents to be notified of an abortion.
So unless you can show that not forcing girls under 18 to disclose and discuss abortions with parents equates to the government making your parental decisions, I think your mired in a bit of a contradiction between your philosophy and your view of the pragmatic benefits of the initiative.
The government isn't making the decisions for parents simply by offering abortions, nor is it making decisions for parents by making parental disclosure voluntary. All of these decisions still rest with the daughter, not the government.
Well... in our society minors are not allowed to enter into contracts without the consent of a legal guardian. I fail to see where the contract to perform medical procedures, no matter what the procedure, should be any different.
This is a really intelligent point. If the infancy standard was interpreted in a general sense, this would render the ballot initiative moot. But as you've said, in spite of the infancy standard in contract law, businessses still transact with minors on a regular basis. It would be stupid for a business to refuse to transact with a willing minor who wanted to make a burger purchase, for instance. I don't think society recognizes the explicit illegality of such a transaction (nor should we), but it is recognized that all of the burdens and liabilities of the transaction rest on the party who transacts with the minor.
This is why there's the need for special legislation. To delineate what minors should not be able to purchase at their young age, of course, but more importantly to eliminate, or at least mitigate, the potentially overwhelming burden on the elder members of society who choose to transact with the minor.
Okay, I'm done. You guys can get back to calling each other names now. :)

[I]From the country's heartland, voters sent messages that altered America's culture wars and dismayed the religious right - defending abortion rights in South Dakota, endorsing stem cell research in Missouri, and, in a national first, rejecting a same-sex marriage ban in Arizona.

Wow.

Minors do not have rights, and that is a FACT.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! !!!!!
Ok, ok, I see how it is. You have rights when you are conceived, but as soon as you're too old to abort (what, roughly 6 months?) you lose those rights until you're 18.
Kind of like one of those free previews of the sports packages on Time Warner Cable, is it?

Yes, quick put a spin on it.
How is that you people can twist things around?
We are talking about MINORS having abortions or other medical procedures w/out having parental consent.
We are not talking about whether abortions are murder or not. 2 different issuse and you should not intertwine the 2.
Yes we all out here know how I feel about abortions.
A parent has the right to be a part of making any kind of medical procedure with their child, and for the medical system to protect the childs privacy rights, but does not protect them while in the womb?? - wow that makes a lot of sense there doesn't it?
Yes minors have rights, but for the most part they have to have their parents consent, but not when it comes to a life threatening issue.

As a guy who absolutely detests children, I actually agree that kids shouldn't have rights.
They're property until the age of 18 & should be treated as such.
Not only should abortion be legal across the board, but I think abortion should be applicable up until the "fetus" is 18 years old.
That way, if your kid is a bitter disappointment you can abort him/her before you set the kid loose on society.
Besides, children are idiots. What a bunch of little shits -- running around with candy-coated, grubby little hands, spilling punch everywhere, all hyperactive from watching crappy cartoons all day. Little bastards.

The way I see it, it should not be up to the government to tell a teenager that she needs to tell her parents about her abortion. It should be up to the parent to foster a healthy, loving, trusting environment for their daughter, so that she feels that she can come to you with such a potentially traumatic situation.
You seem to have such a relationship with your children, so I don't think you should be entirely concerned. I think that- God forbid- should the day come when your daugther has to have an abortion, that she will tell you because she trusts you. And that's how it should be.
But what about the times when there is no trust? Are we really advocating that the government should tell a parent with violent tendencies that their daughter had sex with some guy and was dumb enough to get pregnant? Really? Alright, sir, after you're finished beating the kid out of her I guess she won't need a medical procedure. To each his own, eh?
And my big concern is that this is probably going to happen a great deal if anybody actually passes this shitty proposal. My guess is that there's probably a pretty common inverse corrolation between underage girls needing abortions and quality parenting. Just a hunch. Call it cynical if you want, but it sounds like it's probably right to me.

I asked my doctor about a vasectomy when I was like 22 or 23. He shot me this puzzled expression & said that no ethical doctor in their right mind would perform such an operation at my age.
Which was a crushing & bitter realization to accept.

The time you spend with your children prior to being teenagers is the key.
If you ship em off here and there without your love and attention being given spells trouble for them and you eventually. Parenting is a full time job if you can't provide that you should skip it.
