since we are currently recreating the algerian war of independence in iraq.....
let's discuss the original one.
The Algerian War of Independence (1954–62) was one of the most important decolonisation wars and a complex conflict. It was a period of guerrilla strikes, maquis fighting, terrorism against civilians on both sides, and riots between the French army, the European-Algerians (Catholics & Jews) - or the "colons" as they were called by the FLN - the loyalist Muslim Arab-Algerians Harkis (who had their political party French Algeria Front) against the FLN (Front de Libération Nationale), the MNA - supported by the French Communist Party and Algerian Communist Party, Liberal Pieds-Noirs (European-Algerians), and some pro-independence Arab-Algerians. Eventually the conflict turned into a civil war between the French rebel faction OAS who took the maquis in 1962 and turned against both de Gaulle's loyalist army and the FLN.

The Left in the US hopes we lose the war on terror ?
Now my question is if the demos controled the White House would the
left support the war on terror if the demo prez conducted the war the
same way Mr.Bush has ?

Our main problem in Iraq is not that we are trying to colonize them- though lets face it we are- but rather the fact that we are trying to instill democracy from above. By its nature democracy is a social contract started by the people and not forced down their throats. Iraq is a total mess because we do not know the Iraqi people. We did not investigate the audience we are trying to sell our product to. We have pooped in the bed as far as Iraq goes and it is essentially unwinable unless we get an undemocratic strongman in there. I am sorry but this is the truth.

This I disagree with, Iraq is pretty much the central country in the middle east. There are three main capitals - Cairo, Damascus and Bagdad. I think the goverment is trying to "stabilize" Bagdad, have a decently run goverment, in hopes to change the geopolitical tilt of the middle east. If they succeed in Iraq then maybe we can start to having a safer world.
Has it been properly planned? No, but I think that we are doing the best we can in the war on terror. As Bush said this was not going to be won over night it would and will take years. I think people are losing patience and we must have patience young grasshopper.

WRONG !!!!!! Iraq will never become democratic because you cannot ever force democracy down someone's throat. While Chomsky is dead wrong about many things this is one thing he is dead on about. The longer we stay there the more they will hate us and the unfortunate puppet regime we have there will lose legitimacy by the day. On a scale of one to ten with one being Nicurauguan nightmare to 10 being absolute metaphysical Weimarian disaster Iraq will prove to be a 9.75. IMHO Iraq has all the ear marks of being a weimar disaster and it is in my estimation- and I really hope I am wrong that we will not win this.
Prediction: Within a decade a strongman nationalist theocratic party will be elected in Iraq and a severe strain of anti semitic ultra nationalist Shia theocratic government will come to dominate and terrorize the entire region. Bye Bye.

WOW! I believe that it was the liberals who went into WWII and the conservatives did not want to, in the end the liberals were right. It was a successful mission. It was Ronald Reagan who stood up to the Soviet Union and the liberals thought that was a bad idea, it was a sucessful mission.
We have to do what we can to stabilize Iraq so that we can hopefully live in a SAFER world.

No it was actually the soviet people who stood up to a corrupt government that would make the grant admin blush because it wasn't communist enough. I am not kidding you. Ronny simply exposed to the world what the Soviet people and government already knew. Namely that the USSR was no socialist paradise. The russian and soviet people are to be praised. I just stepped on toes but what do I know I am just a historian. I want Iraq to work but I am a realist enough to see that it probably won't at this juncture.

No because exposing the USSR's weakness to the world inspired us and his star wars program destroyed their ability to compete in the arms race. Also aside from some of his views on Chomsky he is still full of batshit.
